Matty, I understood that the only limits to tint were the driver's and passenger's front windows and windshield, but that the rear windows were not subject to the same tint limitations. This is was further explained to me as to why you often see cars with mildly tinted front windows but basically black rear ones.

It's ALL windows here, for some reason NC is one of the strictest states on it:

(b) Window Tinting Restrictions. – A window of a vehicle that is operated on a highway or a public vehicular area shall comply with this subsection. The windshield of the vehicle may be tinted only along the top of the windshield and the tinting may not extend more than five inches below the top of the windshield or below the AS1 line of the windshield, whichever measurement is longer. Provided, however, an untinted clear film which does not obstruct vision but which reduces or eliminates ultraviolet radiation from entering a vehicle may be applied to the windshield. Any other window of the vehicle may be tinted in accordance with the following restrictions:

(1) The total light transmission of the tinted window shall be at least thirty‑five percent (35%). A vehicle window that, by use of a light meter approved by the Commissioner, measures a total light transmission of more than thirty‑two percent (32%) is conclusively presumed to meet this restriction.(2) The light reflectance of the tinted window shall be twenty percent (20%) or less.

Hey mattyp I believe it's not legal to sell a car that is in any way shape or form, has an illegal mod like that. Its just like brakes...
.you might check into that. It varies from state to state.. you might be able to make them swallow the cost of a new legal tint job.

I asked the cop about that... he said the guy might have had someone "look the other way" when he got it inspected ... but I bought the car in another county and this was a town cop here. The bottom line it has to come off

It's a 300 dollar fine if they yank me. I can have it removed within 15 days but I still have to go to court and still have to pay court costs. Headed for Walmart to buy a heat gun and it's coming off this weekend.

I'm taking the night off from instructing ... I'm on my 3rd beer. And Walmart was out of heat guns so that means a trip to Home Depot tomorrow :icon_rolleyes:

The cop took one look at it and said "I can tell you by looking at it that it's illegal", then he put the light meter on the window. I was WAY over the limit. He told me "if I pulled you over I'd have my gun halfway out before I got out of my car" :icon_rolleyes:

I am only doing the side windows. The back window is tinted but it's not dark, you can actually see into it. I'm doing the 4 side windows and that's it.
