Phone choices for Feb-March 2012 on Verizon, what would you choose and why?

Droid 4 sounds like a good pick for your girl if she likes having a physical keyboard.
You really can't go wrong with The maxx or nexus.

No SD really isnt anything for me, I have a 16g right now that I dont come close to filling up.

Right now I feel that my main choices are the Nexus and Rezound and to be honest if I had to pick right this second I would say the Nexus mainly for the unlockable nature without voiding my warranty by doing it and ICS. This isnt to say that the Rezound isnt a great phone... but the unlockable portion having to go through HTC's site is a fairly big turn off for me and I really want to have full control over my device like I do with my Moto Xoom.

NO matter which device I get, I will more than likely buy the extended battery with it as I know 4g LTE battery life sucks, the only reason is sucks less on the MAXX is because they dumped a massive battery in it, still doesnt mean they fixed the issue of 4g sucking battery power like crazy, it just means they found a way around it for now.

I think my girl is looking at the Rezound and if so I will probably jack the headphones since I use them at work all the time.

You can always unlock it through other ways rather than HTC Dev. Also, it only voids your warranty in theory. In practice it's slightly different. As long as you have the stock OS running, are unrooted and re-lock the phone, Verizon will service your phone. You may not even have to re-lock the phone, Verizon rarely checks and I am fairly certain HTC will also service your phone as long as you weren't trying to mess with overclocking etc.

To be honest it's no one business but my own if I an unlocking, rooting, ROMing my phone and if I hand the phone back to Verizon/HTC in an original condition they should service it without question. Lets just say being in the IT industry has made me cynical and slightly paranoid.

I wish that was true, if only with regular rooting, unlocking and ROMing. I totally understand them not servicing phones if someone overclocked; but other than that they really should. Also, a lot of these companies take advantage of the ignorance of some people, it's probably good that we can sometimes take advantage of theirs.

I try not to offer up potential loopholes for people that take too much money from me every month to begin with more ability to screw me over on a technicality. I'm a firm believer that if I rom, OC , etc etc it is my device to do so and if they want to force me to pay for service I think the burden of proof is on them to prove I did anything wrong.

This.

I am willing to be overclocking your Galaxy Nexus or messing with the radio will ALSO void the warranty on that as well. HTCs own site implies the warranty will remain in effect unless you do something that pushes the hardware beyond what they intended (ie., overclocking).

You can unroot and even re-lock the phone. But once you unlock it the first time, the cat is out of the bag. You can never go back "officially"...HTC will know you are unlocked. In theory Verizon could as well, though verizon has a history of being sloppy about stuff like this. My friend got a warranty replacement on his fully rooted, ROMed AND overclocked Droid 1. LOL

If you dont care about SD then the choice between the two is a lot harder.

According to HTC, unlocking will not void your warranty. All it will do is place conditions on your warranty. If you fry your CPU via overclocking for example. And I believe this applies to Galaxy Nexus users as well. If they fry their CPU by overclocking to 2GHZ, Verizon and Samsung are not going to honor that warranty IMO.

The advantage of the Galaxy Nexus is "official" vanilla Android support. There are already working ICS ROMs for the Rezound and there will be an official ICS release as well. The appeal of the Nexus (IMO) is that it is Vanilla Android, not that it has ICS.

Ya I'm watching for more updates, but if Google for some reason does confirm it then I have no reason to get the Nexus if it's already being abandoned by Google.

Well, it wont be "abandoned"...it will just get updates through Verizon like all the other phones.

My Droid 1 was Vanilla, and not 'supported" by google, but I still got OTA updates for it.

My point was more towards that if Google is already abandoning support for this device this soon then I think thats a pretty good marker of a device I dont want.

I agree it isnt a good sign. At this point I am still betting they are not really abandoning it though. I think it is either a typo or Droid Life is missing something.

I'd agree with that, but needless to say I'm not buying a Nexus until I have a clear answer to this lol

Honestly google support (or not) would not matter to me either way. It is still vanilla android, just like the Droid 1 was. You can root it and ROM it just as easy with or without Google. Even if it isnt "officially" supported, it is the closest you will get to such a phone on Verizon in the foreseeable future.
