The only downside I see is if the battery does die, or deteriorates drastically, that you will need to send it in for service rather than simply buying one yourself.

Not necessarily. The n7 does not have a removable battery, but looks easy enough to replace if necessary. There is a nice teardown video on the web.

Some products are made to be disposable, however, like most apple stuff. That's one of the reasons I don't buy apple though. I prefer to recycle & re-use, not be forced to throw out.
