Play music by folder?

I've always sorted my music my own way on my computer. I have a structure for albums and one for singles, then sorted by genre. The system works for me and I've been using it for over 10 years. That said, it doesn't seem like the Droid's stock media player will cooperate in that sense. I can sort by folder, but it's meaningless as the Droid doesn't look at them. Is there a media player that will play based on folder? I'd rather not create playlists.

No other fans of this method of organization?

Have you tried any of the other players in the market?

I was hoping someone had the same preference and had already found one with this feature. The Market is cumbersome to navigate. There may be several key words to search for (media, player, music, etc.) to find a specific player.

Yea I am not sure which would or wouldnt. The easiest way may be to make playlists.

Yeah I have a similar setup (almost). I have all my singles in one folder and albums in another and they are all in a genre folder. I don't really get specific, I keep mine in like 5 genres. That is the ONLY thing I've missed from my iPod. It didn't let me do folders but I could play by genre which was pretty close in my case.

I did find one player in the market the other day that would play by folder but it didn't have shuffle, was fairly ugly, and had some features that were pointless for music. That player was more setup for audiobooks I think. You could bookmark sections and why would you ever shuffle an audiobook?

I really wish the media player would let you play folders and/or genres. Even if Astro or some other file manager would let you open a folder in Music, that would work. It would be an extra step but at least it would be possible.

I don't want to setup playlists because everytime I add a single I'd have to regenerate it :|

Sounds like we have identical tastes in organization. I, too, only have a handful of genres. Have you been snooping around my computer? :)

I agree with you guys, its much easier to organize music in folders rather than the iTunes style playlists. I'll follow this thread to see if anyone comes up with anything.

Android media player leaves a lot to be desired. The simple oversight that my album tracks are listed alphabetically and not by track number is ridiculous! Why would I want my music alphabetically? It was put on a CD in an order for a reason...

I have yet to find an app to correct this. I even tried NemoPlayer (dump from Acer Liquid) and it had the same problem. Actually it was worse because it didn't even separate tracks from the same artists on different albums (it became one big list for that artist)

That might be the only thing I could fix. As an album doesn't change, I can easily create playlists across my album folders to alleviate this. I haven't checked to see whether the Droid's media player will index all of your folders for m3u files and display them in the Playlists view, but even still, that's a bit more cumbersome than it needs to be.

When I go into an album it shows the tracks in the right order, not alphabetically. It doesn't actually show the track numbers but they are in the correct order. :icon_eek:

I am the SAME way. I sort all of mine in folders by Genre. I then name the songs "band - songname" so the common bands are grouped together.

I've tried a bunch of apps and the only thing that even comes close is Astro Player Beta. It lets you add entire folders. So I added each folder one at a time and bingo, I have a list of Genres.

That is the one I was referring to. It lets you add directories but you can't shuffle, it doesn't have album art, the next/previouse buttons are on top/bottom of play (weird), etc. It is more meant for audiobooks I think.

Yes it has it's shortcomings but the guy is working on it and right now, it's the only way I have without having to create playlists. I wish it would sort things on the main page but what it does right now is show them in the order you added them.

Astro Player plays Music, Video and Audio books. I have a thread here about audio books where I've been making a lot of suggestions to the author and he's implemented some of them. Some of them fold into playing music as well.
