Oh and Mixzing lets you play by genre but theres something about it that I didn't like so I uninstalled it. I can't remember what the issue was though...
I'm using Astro Player now. It has the nice feature of browsing by folder and then just deciding to play a folder or individual files. I wish it did on-the-fly playlists, but it's a start.

I like Meridian the most so far, but it has its bugs. The play queue for one does not play songs that were recently added. If I'm playing through the last song of the queue and then add a song to the queue, it will not skip to that song. There is also no intuitive (that I saw) way to get to the "now playing" section, whether it is a playqueue or a premade playlist. A widget like the stock media player would also be nice, but overall it's a much better player.
I don't really use the Play Queue feature... looks like an update just went out, though; I wonder if that might fix things there?
However, Meridian definitely has a widget. Two, to be precise. For some strange reason the dev chose not to use the App name in the widget list. Both the widgets are simply called 'Music' with the difference between the two being the size. One is 1x4 and the other is 2x4.
Just checked the update out. Nope, it doesn't fix the play queue. The only way to play newly added songs to the queue is to manually select them. Managing the queue can be cumbersome as well. Instead of just being able to swipe a song off the list, you have to go into edit mode, then long press each song and acknowledge that you'd like to remove it. I don't really have much interest in keeping a queue saved. I just want to be able to open the app and start queueing the songs that suit me right then. There's already an option to add a song to a playlist which seems to be sufficient.
I think a lot of players attempt to do everything before getting the basics really squared away. Then again, what I consider the basics may not be everyone's idea.
Hey guys, did any of you notice this little gem that popped up recently?
MortPlayer Simple to use music player for all those who prefer folder structure over tags. (You want your mix folder, not separated by artists, right?).
It's in pretty early development state, so there might be some bugs and not all planned features are implemented.
I've only noticed ONE issue so far. It only plays the songs in the folder you choose and not subfolders. So for example my structure may be something like this:
D = directory, F = file
D "Genre 1"
|-D "Album 1"
|-D "Album 2"
|-F "Misc Song 1"
|-F "Misc Song 2"
So if I tell it to play songs from the "Genre 1" folder, it will only play Misc Song 1 and Misc Song 2, not the other albums in there. It is definitely a step in the right direction and it would be fine with me if I have to resort to taking those albums and dumping them all in one big folder for each genre.
I totally agree with OP, organizing by tags only is retarded. Definitely want. Seems like you need a file browser that can create playlist from long pressing on folder or adding to it like winamp in windows
Of course it will, as long as you don't repeat the folder (and the file types are supported, e.g. .mp3 and .ogg).
The track list (tap on track data) only shows the currently selected folder, but you can swith through all subfolders with the folder buttons or select one by tapping the cover (also in track list).
When all files in a folder are played, the next folder is opened automatically.
Playlist management is not supported and won't be, at least not in this program. It complicates handling too much. Whoever knows the WM version of MortPlayer (overloaded swiss army knife) probably will agree... ;-)
Using the tags and playlists makes more sense to me than folders. You can then use the metadata to generate whatever playlist you want (artist, album, genre, etc) versus being stuck with whatever you manually arranged in a folder at the time.
However, I don't see why there isn't the option to play using folders.
