Please help - looking to root a Samsung Galaxy S4 that is not activated

I have 1 Galaxy S4 that is activated, rooted and working great. Another one, for a friend, is not activated, and I am interested in rooting this phone for my friend. The phone was previously activated and has Internet access. Please let me know how to do this. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated as so much is limited without rooting the phone. Thanks!
Also, I'm a total n00b, so please use language like you're talking to a 4-year-old.

Did you root the first s4? If so then it should be the same, activated or not. You can just use WiFi on the unactivated phone.

The phone had been rooted at one point, but it had a system failure and a complete system reinstallation was needed. When the system was restored it was no longer rooted.
