Just fiddled around a bit more.
First, I manually deleted the files that I knew weren't on the SD card, anymore, via the gallery interface.
Second, I downloaded, installed, and used SDrescan, as suggested, rechecked the gallery to see no change. I did this about three times, then decided to mount my phone. I thought that maybe if I moved the movies out of the folder I had made for them and into the main directory, they'd show up.
When I looked in the movies folder, all the new movie files that I watched transfer onto my DROID's SD, earlier, were no longer there. The available disk space on the SD card confirms that there is not a glitch, but that the files I had transferred earlier, are now gone.
I'm going to try removing movies that I know work, then adding them to the gallery, again, as a sort of control test. If that works, I'll try the same with the new files. If the new files don't work, I can assume there's something wrong with the way they were formatted. I won't be able to do this until my lunch break, however...
