Random reboots / crashing

Had my D3 about 4 days and it crashed while returning to home screen from a google search at which point it froze on the Motorola "red ball" boot up screen. Spoke with tech support and they walked me through a couple reset routines, none of which fixed the issue. Pulling the battery did no good, it just came back to the frozen "red ball" screen. Interestingly, a few hours before meltdown I messed with the Mirror Mode and HDMI feature which the D3 DID NOT LIKE AT ALL! The screen blinked on/off, the sound stuttered, and it just acted weird with no success using Mirror Mode. I wonder if that was the start of its final meltdown? I'm just sending it back which is a cluster in itself and there are no D3's available to ship until 8/30... of course. Luckily, I held on to my faithful and trustworthy D1 to hold me through, I've never had an issue with the D1.

for some reason, I thought having Gingerbread might mean less reboots than my D2G. So far, 2 days and about 3 reboots.
Most annoying problems:
  • Was unable to answer an incoming call; after some reading, others sometimes see a slide to unlock vs. push to answer screen... I didn't try to slide anything on the screen, although could be the UI display vs. actual controls being out of sync. After this, caller left a voicemail message... but the Phone app itself crashed, and shortly after returning to a blank homescreen, the phone rebooted itself.
  • camera app freezes on initialization... several times, fixed by reboot. I have forced-closed before seeing any error msg, but it shows a camera icon in the middle of the screen for awhile before I gave up.
  • One other basic app caused a force-close.. I think it was the main dialer/contact list.
After this, I rooted & attempted to remove some bloatware today... so far, so good.. but I haven't really used it much yet. Time will tell...

* I imported settings from my prior D2G backup... after reading that it may cause problems, I removed (forgot) all existing WiFi connections.. again, hopefully this does some good! I guess I might try a factory reset & not restore the backup if the problems persist...

Random Reboots/crashing

So far I've had my droid 3 for 2 days now and I've had a total of 4 crashes. I have been in the middle of typing something online 3 times and on a phone call the 4th time. When it happens the phone gives the droid robot noise "droooid" and then shows the startup animation. It boots back up quickly but is incredible frustrating because its always when im in the middle of something.

Anyone else experience this issue yet? I hate to have this be the first phone I need to replace especially when its not even out yet in stores so most likely no walking into verizon.

Mine has been doing this for about 2 weeks now. Not every day, but at least 4 days a week it will just randomly reboot. It also happens numerous times per day. I've talked to the service dept at my Verizon store, they replaced my battery with no success. Apparently Motorola knows about it, and are working on a fix, but nothing as of yet has been done. So unfortunately, it's a waiting game.

So far, after clearing all my restored wifi profiles (havent bothered re-creating yet) and rooting/removing a few of the more obvious crapware apps... no reboots.

So if really is the fault of the wifi profiles & poorly written applications, that's far easier to deal with vs. A hardware + OS issue.

Have only sent a few txts & made a couple short voice calls... but after 10 hrs, my battery is hovering around 80%.... far better than usual! (Havent used g maps much or at all today)

Biscuit935, have you tried the WiFi fix?

Yeah I have had 4 droids and all of them keep rebooting. Pissen me off. I have 0 apparently but what comes with it. I've told Verizon everytime it happens. They say the same thing over and over. Do the factory reset. Can you say SPRINT HERE I COME.

What makes you think it's a Verizon problem?

NDFAN, have you tried the WiFi fix? There's a known issue in Android 2.3.4 and a known work around.

I have random reboots and recently exchanged my phone for a new one from Verizon. However, the second phone started having the same issues. While talking to the Verizon service rep, he mentioned that Backup Assistant (BA) can only run over the 3G network. If WiFi is turned on, it will fail to sync. I started watching for this and realized over the next day that BA was the cause of my rebooting problem. I wondered why it happened during certain times of the day and found that's when BA is optioned to sync.

I still haven't figured out how to live with this since I do not want to run over 3G all the time. At home, I should be able to run over my WiFi without issues. Short of calling Verizon, does anyone have a suggestion to remedy this? Thanks in advance.

I haven't heard about the Wifi fix. What is it and what do I need to do? If your saying it should only "crash"/reboot when only using Wifi that's not it. I can be in the middle of texting or a phone call and it will reboot. Or the cell could just be sitting there and do a random reboot. I have the BA set for 1200am. The reboot happens at random times.
As far as me saying its Verizon fault Iam meaning I've got a a couple of friends with the EVO and they have never had issues with there cell and they download alot of crap onto it.
Just frustration that's all.

So, there's a bug in Android 2.3.4. I'm not 100% certain of the details but it's triggered by the following things happening:
  1. Syncing your WiFi settings with Google (IE: Upgrade to a new phone or factory default your phone, then sync with Google)
  2. Loss of WiFi signal.
If you want the details, go back through this thread as I posted links to people who explain it better than I do. What you need to do is go to...

Settings -> Wireless & network -> Wi-Fi Settings - Manage networks -> Manage networks[sic] options

When asks if you want to "Forget all networks?" select yes.

Then when the opportunity arises, set up your WiFi settings manually. I don't know the relationship with Backup Assistant but I don't use it and I had the random reboots. The above cured me for this particular problem (which is a software reboot). There are a few other problems which may creep up but *none* I've run into are nearly as prevalent or prolific as this particular one. It's not limited to the Droid 3 either.

The Verizon support folks believe that reseting to default and not syncing with Google cures this particular problem. The reason this works is it never syncs the WiFi settings. So you can go ahead and sync and then clear out the WiFi settings.

I never reset my phone to defaults. I didn't left the apps I used installed. And the above cured my problem. I hope it cures yours.

^^I'm hoping this does the trick. All of my reboots were when wi-fi was on. I've since cleared the settings and no reboots yet. Going on about 10 hours now.

Why does anyone use Backup Assistant?

Someone could steal your phone and delete contacts, then they can go and delete your gmail and google contacts too. Then if you get a new phone you can say verizon I need my contacts from a week ago put on my new phone.

Proud of my bloated D3, I don't miss unstable roms on my D1 at all!

I too am having random reboots and crashes, but with mine all of a sudden the phone starts to lag extremely and then when I go to unlock my phone it just reboots there on the spot, at first I thought it was a problem with ram but I have plenty of ram open, and it annoys the heck out of me why that is, when the phone first comes on is when it is the fastest but after that it is all downhill
