Razr Maxx HD vs. Galaxy s3

I know this still isn't quite 100%, but running the latest leak (VRBLK1) includes these options:

Yeah, the Jelly Bean update will include global support. Verizon promised it would be coming when the phone launched, and a major update like Jelly Bean is the perfect time to do it. Unless a major issue pops up, the latest leak is expected to be the OTA, and it has GSM enabled.

After the Fascinate issues, I'm holding out for 100%. The Froyo update destroyed that phone. Battery was lasting 4 hours max until the next update made it somewhat usable.

But it is close enough to 100% to decide to wait for it.

Jntdroid, if you install the phone info app, you will be able to see all of the network possibilities. I get the same menu when I select network in settings on my M, but with the phone info app, it expands it to list all the networks that are capable.

The Phone Info app has shown the S3 to be GSM capable since launch. But the problem has been that while the hardware is there (and that's what the Phone Info app is looking at), it hasn't been enabled on the software side of things for the S3. So even if you forced a current stock Verizon S3 into GSM mode through the Phone Info app, the GSM radio won't work due to the lack of software. The Jelly Bean update will enable GSM through the software, resulting in the menu options jntdroid showed.

Thanks bsweetness! (He's my international capable guru, lol)! You may or may not know the answer to this but is my JB Razr M capable of international roaming, using a foreign SIM? With the phone info app, I know it has the hardware but how do I know if it has the software?

Verizon advertises it as being a global device (as noted by the globe in the picture below taken from Verizon's website), so yes, it's GSM capable using a foreign SIM. If you go into your network settings, you should have a global option along with CDMA/LTE and GSM only.

Thanks! And yes I do have a global option. It is just like my og Razr Maxx in that respect so I assumed it was foreign SIM capable because my og Razr was proven to be.

Why not think about the razr m??? Great phone

The RAZR M is a nice phone, but not really in the same league as the HD and The GS3. I looked at the M and decided I'd rather keep my og RAZR.

Love the screen, couldn't stand the rest of it. Looks like it's made of cheap plastic and the design of the case was an afterthought. Not even close to it's big brothers. It is priced accordingly though, and I did consider it.

With a case it's probably fine, but I just want the biggest screen that will fit in my hand/pocket - which puts the Note 2 out of the question as well.

Yeah the note 2 is a sweet device, but I might as well jam a nexus 7 in my pocket

I'm due for an upgrade and I'm naturally trying to decide between 2 of the top phones on Verizon. It seems like there isn't a sure fire winner either way. Does anyone have any comments or help on which phone would be better? I like the rom ability of the gs3 a lot.
The main things I'm looking for are:
Battery ....I know the maxx wins here but how much difference is there in daily use?
Build quality... I've heard stories of glass braking on the gs3
I live in a good signal area if that matters. I use to have the OG droid and loved installing roms. Is that reason worth it alone to go to the gs3? I also use a MacBook and have heard of issues with the gs3 not syncing right with theses computers?

Any help would be great appreciated

All the negatives you mentioned are valid, more roms will be coming for the HD. But with the gs3 able to unlock the bootloader definitely helps on that front. are you willing to void your warranty right off the bat?

Sent from my XT912 running KOA resurrection CM10 jelly bean

I'm not crazy about voiding my warranty. Having said that, I can't stand and couldn't live with touchwiz at all. At least the Motoblur is pretty close to aosp so it would be easier to live with it.

A replacement launcher from the Play Store like Nova, Apex, or Go Launcher essentially gets rid of all of the most visible aspects of Touch Whiz without the need for root or unlocking the bootloader. You can make the UI look however you want it to. I'm not a big fan of the look of Touch Whiz myself (although I am a fan of the many useful features it adds), so I'm running a replacement launcher. If you were to look at my phone, it looks nothing like Touch Whiz.
