Real Reason For the Delay?

Verizon employee here: I was with tech support for the past 2 years and now manage a retail store. As far as the company is concerned, it absolutely was an official delay. An announcement of an official release date was never made to consumers but it was made to all of the stores (Best Buy, corp retail, etc.), and that date was pushed from February 14th to the 24th and then there was rumor of the 28th, but the official memo came out earlier today, stating that the launch will be delayed and there is NO new ETA. In fact, my bet is that it may be a minute due to the fact that they have also ordered us to cease all orders of accessories for the TB for the time being. Neither I nor anyone I know still in tech support has heard anything about the craziness the OP spoke of dealing with 1 hour battery life (WTF??!!) or connectivity issues. The only valid issue we have been told is a possible delay due to Skype things being worked out correctly.

... a minute?

'black_man_x' a very reliable source on twitter, said one of the reasons was the network wasn't ready for the stress yet and it could cause the TB to reset in the middle of a call

Yeah thats true. I did hear that they were going to run out and upgrade a couple thousand 4g transmitters to be able to handle the load of 1 phone. LOL Whoever "Black_Man_X" is clearly has no clue how a mobile network even works. VZW would have far greater concerns, like a whole engineering department to fire immediately, if the 4g network couldn't handle the stress of 1 phone that won't use half the data that the tons of already active 4g mobile broadband cards are using. And fyi to Black_Man_X also, the network is still going to use the already existing CDMA 1X for voice coverage so the 4g network has absolutely nothing to do with phone calls. Just sayin.:icon_eek:

Good point, no VoLTE, but what about the 3g simultaneous voice and data? could that reset the phone? or possibly the 3g/4g handoff in the middle of downloading?

BTW, black_man_x is one of the testers higher up in the verizon chain who has been using the phone for awhile now

Oh to add a little smile to my fellow droids. My mother in law upgraded to her first smart phone. We go in and she's looking at Droids. I walk outside and the rep tries to explain to her that the "IPhone" is easier to use than a droid. My mother in law says "my son in law has a droid, I don't want that apple mess" no lie it was hilarious. Oh and the rep let me play with a dummy phone because they had a sign in the door "HTC Thunderbol" "2/28"

They (vzw) have had commercials for the Tbolt for 2 weeks now and ads all over the web.

But, according to our source Verizon is worried that the Thunderbolt will further cannibalize iPhone sales, leaving Verizon stores with, if you can believe this, an inventory of unsold iPhones. So, (and again, this is just what our source is guessing), Big Red is actually holding the Thunderbolt until they move enough iPhones to be able to smile.
So I would like all of you to go to your nearest VZW store and buy a IPHONE, OK

This is the reason I guessed it's being held back in that other thread that was so rudely shut down. A software problem doesn't make sense to me other than a major issues they've found, and I don't think Skype counts. That is a secondary function that I'm sure consumers would be okay waiting for as update to get.

iPhone - no thanks!

What Verizon must not understand is the iPhone appeals to only certain people. Those of us who are waiting for 4G LTE/Android O/S have no interest in iPhone. I've never wanted an iPhone and will never buy an iPhone.

Actually, Skype probably DOES count...If the software is already on the phones, but now they find a glitch with it, perhaps the phones must be flashed with new software or the dummies over at Skype are being given a (frantic) chance to correct things on their end. I went round and round with Skype this last year trying to get them to correct problems so that it would run on my Windows 7, 64 bit laptop and my Windows Vista 64 bit laptop. The glaring problems were acknowledged by the development team, but as far as I know, never really corrected. They just sorta told us how to work around them. If this were to be the case with Thunderbolt, it would explain why no release date has been announced. Cause HTC and Verizon DON'T KNOW when it will be ready!

We all remember earlier on in this release fiasco that Verizon was talking about the initial release having 2 things not working:
1. The wireless tethering function for multiple devices.
2. SKYPE video calling.

Remember a few weeks ago when the CEO of HTC said the phone were gonna ship the next week? Well, maybe this Skype thing reared it's ugly head and the shipment is being held up somewhere in the pipeline.

What could be worse than delay after delay after delay? The phone not working right, that's what. Verizon has got to tread the waters very very carefully right now. I know they are only too well aware of how much we all are hating these delays.

I just went into bestbuy and they told me once again that the tb will not be out cause the skype isn't working ok one why can't we just get the phone I jus want he phone they can fix the problem later lol

Hahahahaha. Dude Black_Man_X is one of the main guys behind Verizons 4G network. He has more than a clue I can assure you.

^^I'm going to have to side with wisdroid on that. Voice calls don't use 4G.

Plus I'm sure Verizon did the math months ago to ensure their new network could handle the stress of phones and mobile cards, and did plenty of testing.

haha this site has gone ape sh*t over this. Black Man X is about the only reliable source we've had. Everyone is getting irritated with everyone else. Im just as pissed as the next guy and spend majority of my day researching this phone's release but Jesus, people relax

I heard that the Thunderbolt going on sale was potentially going to open up an investigation by the FTC into monopoly practices by Verizon as iPhone sales are not high enough to level the playing field.

I am also completely joking. A VZW operator actually offered me the ability to buy a TB on Tuesday but I didn't take her up on it since I was getting a replacement phone from Asurion and she said she'll call me on Monday and we'll finish the deal. Hmmm.... perhaps I should have grabbed it while I could have? I don't know. Either way, I would have been locked into probably a 2 year deal (not sure if there is a 1 year) and 4G prices that were not announced and probably way higher than 3G, knowing Verizon.

To be honest... I'm considering never moving up to 4G since 3G is sufficient and data seems much cheaper and I can practically stay at "unlimited data" indefinitely. I'm scared to think of the 4G tiered pricing.
