Ringer is too quiet, even at full volume

I had this problem creep up last week. All of a sudden my ringer and alarms were very quiet, even when I had them set to full volume. After reading some things here I tried removing the battery and then *228. Fixed the problem. I didn't see this problem listed so I thought I would note it here in case anyone else has the same problem.

I ran into that just once last week...unfortunately I was not able to pinpoint what may have caused it. A reboot of the phone worked to fix it.

What I did figure out, however, was that they were quiet because all those sounds were coming from the earpiece instead of the main speaker. It may have had something to do with switching in and out of the speakerphone when I was on a call, but I'm not sure.

I have seen reports of this elsewhere and also experienced it myself once. Like mrschmitz, I noted that the sound was coming from the earpiece rather than the speaker. Resolved with reboot.

Me too

Same exact thing was happening to me. So glad I found this site. I was ready to return the phone!!! Took the battery out and it works. Like you, it must have happened after I had the earphones in. I took out the battery and at least for now it seems temporarily fixed.
What is the *228 thing ?
Thanks all, Ggirl444

It updates the phones cell tower information for roaming information and such as far as I know. I know I'm oversimplifying it, so I hope someone can explain further.

You explained it fine, *228 updates the Radio (PCS) information for (theoretically) better reception.

On "dumb" phones it was also where Verizon could update and do patches to the BREW Operating System on those phones, but that doesn't cut it or work with the Droid, so only the communication information can be updated that way.
