I always had problems with Wifi as well, but I know for a fact it works fine. That's all my dev phone uses for internet, since it's not an activated phone, it's solely on Wifi.
Wifi has always been, shall we say, "buggy" on Android. I use WPA2-AES only encryption on mine. Some people have better success with WPA2-TKIP.
Your best bet, to diagnose the issues, is to attempt to connect with no security on your Wifi at all, then go from there. Try different settings for security and see what works. My router (a D-Link DIR-615-C1) works best with WPA2-AES, so I would suggest trying that, but if it doesn't work, play with the settings. It's a problem with the Android OS in general.
