Is your phone rooted? You have to have a rooted phone to install any of this stuff. I know you said you rooted your phone but it sounds like your phone isn't rooted.Ok.I see what's happening. The roms are not even installing for me. Whenever I "install" one it simply goes back to the droid mod opening and theme. Sorry if I've done something stupid lol.
When I install it, it goes to clockwork recovery.
That is correct and good.
It ask to reboot
Again correct and good.
and a few other options that don't really apply.
It should ask if you want to create a backup and wipe data and cache. How are your responding to these options?
I hit reboot or update. Zip.
I don't recall being asked these questions when downloading a rom. I thought that once I tap make a backup and wipe it went into boot and installed the new rom.
Either way it reboots and comes out the same way it was before the download. I've been doing what everyone has said, but to no avail.
I've been trying to install cyanogen.
Ok... first you have to make sure you have ClockworkMod recovery installed... it's the first thing in the list... if you don't have it and some things are greyed out you will need to touch that to get it installed.
Next... Go to Download Rom >> Cyanogen Mod >> Click CyanogenMod 5.0.7.1 >> wait for it to download >> you will see a gear thing in the notification area and if you swipe the notification area down you can see progress. When it's done downloading you touch it in the notification area and it will ask you if you want to backup your current mod and wipe data and cache... I recommend you check both and hit ok. The device will reboot into recovery, install the mod automatically and then reboot again back to the home screen.
Note: You won't see a huge difference in the theme... you have to install a theme if you want that... Below is an example of how to install Blue Energy (my personal choice)
1. Open ROM Manager and choose Download ROM.
2. Scroll down to “roberj13″ and tap.
3. Then choose the Blue Energy Theme option for Cyanogen.
4. When prompted, check the box for “App Pack for CM.”
5. Once finished downloading, you do not need to “wipe data and cache.”
6. Check the box to “backup” if you don’t have a recent one.
7. Press “OK” and your phone will reboot.
8. Let it work its installation magic, reboot and BAM! Done!
This list comes from Droid Life
TIP: If you have apps installed now and you want to back them up you can install Astro File Manager... start it up... hit the menu key... select Tools... Backup... backup apps.

So I have been attempting the same things to no avail...explanation of what I have done.
-I rooted my droid via instructions found at www .droid-life.com/2010/09/09/how-to-root-motorola-droid-running-android-2-2-frg22d/
-I have achieved Super User rights and have confirmed my droid is rooted.
-I have flashed a ClockworkMod Recovery image as well.
-Tried to perform a backup in to which the phone reboots and never backs up.
-I tried the above instructions and downloaded the CynogenMod Rom it asks if I want to backup the current Rom and I check it, asked to wipe data and cache that is also checked also asks to clear a cache that starts with a D or something and I also checked as well.
....Phone then powers down....after a minute or 2 it re-boots back up.
***I also fixed permissions in RomManager to see if that worked and it didnt do anything at all.
Is there something I am missing? Possibly something to do with the superuser rights? Do I need to update that app? I have already updated BusyBox via Titanium Backup. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I see this is an old thread.
