[HACKS] Root Droid 1 - regardless of OS version

Wow, Windows 7 is quite the enigma! I also tried copying the file to the desktop and running in "Windows XP SP3" mode and it still failed. Oh well, at least we've come up with plenty of options for people to try. :)
OK, I know it's always this way with developers, but "it doesn't do it on my system".

Attached is a screen shot of RSDLite 4.7 on my shiny new Windows 7 Professional (32 bit) machine. I'm running it as a VM, but I can't see how that would matter since even Windows 7 doesn't know that the machine it is running on is virtual.

I have my file named normally and it's in c:\data\droid\SBF\. My Start button is ready and willing.

Maybe it's your version of RSD Lite, maybe it's a 64-bit thing, I dunno.

Are you running Pro?

Since I have a Windows 7 machine now, the first thing I did was enable the freakishly-missing "Run" command on the Start Menu (why the heck would that be disabled by default?), and the second thing I did was undo the ineffable "hide file extensions" setting. For any of you that want to turn off "dummy mode" (as I call the default mode of hiding the file extensions in versions of Windows newer than NT 4.0), the attached screen shot should tell you all you need to know.

Help I keep getting flash failed. I am running as administrator.
Details? It looks like either Vista or Win7, and it looks like you probably got the 730 error which is likely that it doesn't like your USB port or something. If you're on Vista/Win7 you can try RSD Lite 4.7 - some folks report success that route. My pat answer is "use Windows XP", but I know that's not convenient for everyone. You could always put on Cygwin and try sbf_flash, but if the issue is that your USB ports are no good (for this purpose) then switching to Cygwin with sbf_flash probably won't fix it.

I have Vista 32-bit. I have like 7 different ports so should I just give another one a shot? I also have Rsd lite 4.6 so if I have to go about the 4.7 route is there a link for it? I know some of the newer ones have access codes to them.

Cool. If you have a different "bank" of USB ports (like some are built into the motherboard and some are on a card) then the ones on the card are more likely to be USB 2.0. All my machines are USB 2.0, so I can't verify this, but many folks have reported that RSD doesn't like USB 1.1. If that fails, try RSD Lite 4.7. If that fails, find an old-fart geek like me that has an XP laptop he'll let you flash your phone from. Or, give Cygwin a shot. You just stick it in a folder on your Windows machine, and it give you a nice little embedded Linux emulator. I don't know if anybody has tried sbf_flash from Cygwin before, but maybe you could be first. If it worked it would be a possible solution to these crazy Windows Vista/7 issues.

Heck, I'm gonna go grab Cygwin and stick it on my XP machine and try sbf_flash on it because now I want to know... Doesn't mean it will work in Vista/7, but nothing is perfect.

Got it! Tried a different port and installation was done in a matter of minutes.

Thank You for your quick help and a very easy way to root your phone! Very valuable.

Thanks again:)

I realized before I ever got started that this would fail. Duh - you have to recompile your app for Cygwin from source and the sbf_flash is not open source. I ran it just so I could say I tried and got the expected:

Code:
Administrator@somepc /bin
$ sbf_flash
/usr/bin/sbf_flash: /usr/bin/sbf_flash: cannot execute binary file

So much for that plan.

Good news! I think I'm going to add a "Frequently Encountered Issues" section to the OP, and the 730 error seems to be an unhappy USB port about 100% of the time. For the purposes of my enlightenment, was the USB port that worked different from the one that didn't in any discernible way (other than being a different port)? In other words, was the no-good one on the front and the good on the back, one one the motherboard and one on a card, etc.?

Newbie question

I apologize if this is covered elsewhere but I'm stumped as to what to do. Last weekend I followed these instructions to root my 2.2 FRG01b Droid. this morning I received an update from Verizon and I told it to install but the build number still says FRG01b. I had expected the update to break root and install but that's not the case so... Now I'm going to sound uninformed (which I am)
Is there a way for me to manually update to FRG22D? Currently I'm using the stock ROM as I am new to this whole process and I want to stay with that. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The no good one was on the left side of my laptop. The good one was on the right side of it. Here is my computer if it helps in finding out if it is a newer USB then the left side: http://cdgenp01.csd.toshiba.com/content/product/pdf_files/detailed_specs/satellite_X205-S7483.pdf
According to that though all the ports are 2.0 so I am not sure why it didn't like the left side.

*One last question to is the superuser version an older version and there is another version available or no. I just ask because the icon isn't the same as the one I had been using before. Thanks

Thanks for the details. In fact the Superuser you have now is newer than the Ninja version you had before and has approximately 6 million new features (OK, maybe not 6 million :-)). You've got 2.3.2.3. The link in my sig will take you to the developer's page if you want to upgrade to 2.3.5 (a few weeks newer than what's in my package), but there is nearly no discernible difference (which is why I haven't bothered to update the package).

Oh okay. I was only wondering cause the app shootme keeps saying I don't have root. When one I have a custom theme on here so that isn't the issue. So i didn't know if it was just an old superuser version doing it.:)

Actually, that is an issue that has been reported to the developer. It has been out there for awhile with no updates. You might want to pop on his topic and ask him about it. He may be waiting for someone willing to work with him and give him logs and/or try test fixes he can offer.
