Root or Not to Root that is the question

You'll be done with rooting so fast you'll really want to move on to installing Steel Droid. And then you will...:icon_ banana:

WE HAVE ROOT! Well thanks to all. I am still running XP so I had to use the modified one-click root files. Sux because I don't think that one has an un-root option but for now I am good.

So now I want to move on to Steel but am not sure what to do next. I know there's a bootstrap but I also keep seeing this "clockwork" stuff. Do I just download bootstrap and run it? What's this clockwork thing and how does that come into play. That's all that's confusing me now but root was successful...

Clock Work Mod Recovery (or CWM for short) is what boostrapper give's you...so. Go to hash-of-codes.blogspot.com and navigate to his "Android" tab. DL the appropriate app for your phone (Found here: Hash of Codes: Android Downloads) and install it. This will let you install Steel Droid when you're ready.

Personally, I normally make a back up of the stock OS first. When the back up is complete and the phone has rebooted itself I delete a widget from one of the screens, boot into recovery and restore the back up. If it's a good back up copy, it will complete successfully and your widget will be back on the screen from which you deleted it. It's probably an extraneous process but it's one that makes me more comfortable when I start flashing ROM's and Themes. Once I know the back up is solid, I will copy that back up to my laptop to keep it safe, just in case the file on the phone gets corrupted.

The rest is just following the instructions from the OP, these are extra steps I take to ensure I've got a way out, should anything go completely wrong.

Setting up ADB and getting your stock SBF in place is another good idea. You'll be able to recover to stock quickly and easily if you are familiar with this process.

I'm sure I'm forgetting something but that's what comes to mind when I think about rooting and ROM'ing for your first time.

Good Luck.

EDIT: I just realized I referenced 'the OP'. I should have said 'the Steel Droid OP'. I hope that didn't create any confusion.

@JohnnyB....THANKS for taking the time. I am going to refer to your note and others on this thread and try this in a few hours. I am all for the extra caution so I'll get to the point where I feel good about making a backup and post back to let you know how I am making out. Thanks for the link also!!! More to come and thanks so much for bearing with me and handholding me. One thing I promise to all is that I'll give back to the community by helping those who come after me

EDIT: OK, bootstrap tool is downloaded. Now do I just switch to mass storage and click "bootstrap recovery" to make a backup of the stock OS? Note I am not copying any .zip files for steel yet but I want to do what you said and try deleting the widget and restoring....

Use your phone to DL the app. If you DL to the PC you'll have to connect to the PC and copy the file to your phone. DL'ing directly to the phone will save you a step.

Done. I oppened the app and clicked bootstrap recovery. I actually loaded STEEL DROID! It's on there now.

I guess my question at this point is...should I ever need to...how do I get the phone back to factory settings? Is there a similar .zip file that will bring the phone back to the way VERIZON had it set up. Can't imagine I'd ever want to go that route but just in case, is there an easy way?

Cannot wait to see if this makes my performance any better!!!

Just flashed back to steel droid 3.0 because I realized he actually did create many of the add-ons and there were a couple that I really wanted. In the description it states to download and use CWR to flash addon. Can anyone explain this? I'm back up and running on steel 3.0. I know I have to download the zip and I assume put it on my MOT drive root folder. What exactly do I do next to get the addon?

I currently have the droid bionic and thats basically the same thing as the droid 3 as far as rooting goes, but the only difference is in the custom roms you can install. I personally love my rooted phone because i can access all the things that i would normally not be able to access like removing bloatware and getting wifi hotspot. And if you do decide to root it i would recommend getting an overclocking/underclocking app so you can get the best performance or the best battery life which really helps if you are just a tech geek like me or have to travel alot for work. it is very nice to have the wifi hotspot for a laptop or some sort of tablet. Rooting also allows u to get the webtop mode so you can plug in a mini hdmi into your phone and then the other end into your tv/monitor and then you will have another computer. YOU SHOULD ROOT IT HAHA

I used the one click method to root, then got rom tool box/rom manager to do my rom (liquid 3.2) for my OG droid that is not on the network anymore. I practiced with it before I went about messing with my D3. I was very apprehensive like yall but read a hug amount before I did it.

As for my D3, I have it stock rooted and made a bunch of tweaks via rom tool box. Added themes icons the whole bit. Battery life is much much better now. Was going to buy a extended battery but no need for that now.

Before you do anything, read, read and then read some more. Follow each step carefully and you'll be straight.:D

Idk what custom roms they make for the D3 but for my bionic I run liberty 3 and I thought there was no reason for an extended battery but I just got one yesterday and it is awesome to have. My battery lasts so long now. But glad that rooting went well for u :)

I read up on the many choices out there for roms for my OG droid. Liked what I read and the reviews about the liquid roms, ran 2.6 at first then upgraded the day to 3.2. Badass. As for my D3, it is stock rooted. I only tweaked the settings via rom toolbox. Awesome all-in one tool there. No need for an extended battery now. I dont have to carry around my charger no more! I am a heavy user.

In the past I have felt that rooting would possibly be ruinous to my phone, but after I got the gingerbread update I started having all kinds of buggy problems. At that point I considered rooting and putting a custom ROM on it. Ironically I couldn't root using unrevoked after the update because it doesn't support gingerbread.

Since then there are ways to revert back to 2.2 and then root but it sounds messy and I don't want to deal with that my first time rooting. Basically though I would say that if your phone is no longer getting OTAs to the next version of android then there's really nothing to lose.
