Rooted, now need to back everything up...

2nd Alternative -

If that doesn't work, I would suggest backing up ALL your data, including your contacts then proceed with doing a Factory Reset within the Android System. (Mean to NOT do it in Recovery.)

How to do this.. Menu key >> Settings >> Privacy >> Factory Data Reset.

Then re download Bootstrap Recovery and make a Nandroid backup.

I don't understand why you are suggesting that I backup all my data...thats what I've been trying to do since the beginning...isn't that why I downloaded bootstrapper and rom manager to begin with?

So since bootstrapper and rom manager absolutely refuse to work, is there some other way I can back everything up?

Why I'm telling you to backup all your data is because you should try a Factory Reset. Then try bootstrapping again.

When you do a factory reset you lose all your data, hence why I'm telling you to back it all up and attempt to get Bootstrap working so you can have a Nandroid backup.

Let me go into a little more in-depth detail for you so you can better understand my instructions/reasoning..

Nandroid Backup - A FULL backup of your Android System. Includes - Data, Cache, Apps, Settings, Contacts, and everything that your phone was when you made that backup.

Backing up Data on your phone - This is to save your contacts, and Apps, so that way when you make a change say, install a Custom ROM you can get them back with ease instead of downloading all of them one-by-one.

Bootstrapper by Koush - Injects and sets up a Custom Recovery within your phone to allow the installation of Custom ROMs, Themes, and Updates created by Users, or Third Party creations, and to make full Nandroid backups of your phone in case of bootloops.

ROM Manager - Download ROMs, Mods, and other things that can make your phone look and operate differently. Also used to flash Clockwork Mod on to your phone, and fix permissions.

SD Card - Can be used in numerous ways to backup App Data, Contacts, and others. This is where all your Nandroid Backups, ROMs, and other information will be stored that you have downloaded and put on your phone.

Titanium Backup - Used to backup Apps+App Data. The easiest one-tap way to backup everything at once, instead of hooking up to WiFi and downloading everything at once.

Now since everything has been explained on what they do, and WHY I had you use them or mentioned them to you, I'll explain myself.

Since you can't boot into clockwork, neither ROM Manager nor Bootstrapper is working. I wanted you to backup your APPS and CONTACTS so you could do a Factory Reset and start fresh and see if Bootstrapper would work on a newly started System. Then if that solved the issue, you could boot into Clockwork Mod and make a full Nandroid Backup and continue to modify your phone to meet your needs if that's the road you choose to go down.

This is my original post in this thread:

"Recently rooted my Droid 2 using the first method mentioned in this thread...

Multiple phones - Root them, unroot them

Now before I start messing around with ROMs and themes I wanted to back everything up.

What is the best way to go about this?"

I've been trying to backup my phone all along. I was suggested bootstrapper by the first response.

You telling me to create a backup of my APPS and CONTACTS without telling me how doesn't make sense - since I've been trying to do that all along.

All of your contacts and apps are backed up to Google and will restore once you log back in (paid apps for sure...write down your free apps just in case). Bootstrapper backs up EVERYTHING (minus basebands). All system and data images are backed up. We got you to get those apps for when you flash ROMs, themes, and the like in case something went wrong.

DroidForums junkie!!

But in order to get everything BACKEDUP you must get Bootstrapper working. Which is what I've been trying to help you troubleshoot all along.

Okay I'll do the factory reset, but before I do, when I am in recovery and hit the search button the screen reads as follows:

Android system recovery <3e>

reboot system now

apply sdcard:update.zip

wipe data/factory reset

wipe cache partition

and at the bottom it says in yellow:

E: Can't open /cache/recovery/command

does that tell you anything at all?

My D2 reads the same. And it's rooted, deodexed, running a custom rom, and overclocked..

So, this doesn't really tell me anything to be Completely honest..

I'd try the factory reset.

Did the factory reset. Same results as before...

Open Bootstrapper
Click Bootstrap Recovery
It asked for superuser permissions
Then it says Success! You should now reboot into recovery to complete the installation.
Hit ok.
Then I hit Reboot Recovery.
Phone turns off, Motorola M pops up, droid character with triangle and exclamation point pops up.

lol. the bold always makes me think dustin is yelling.

have we tried wiping the cache of the bootstrapper yet? I'm starting to think the only way this phone will backup is by sbfing it first...

anyway, install the bootstrapper, then wipe the cache from the recovery menu, then try to boot into clockwork recovery.

if you go back to regular backup, wipe the cache, reboot, then try again

He may be...the world will never know! Haha!

Lol nah, I'm not yelling.. :P

And as for the cache/data wipe from stock recovery, he's already tried that, just taken a different approach.

He may have to SBF but I honestly don't think he'd be down to do that.. However if he is, and he's willing to take the time out to do, I'll post the links and guide on how to do it.

Okay, that is something I've never encountered, bootstrapper shouldn't ask for that.

Should just be "Boostrap Recovery"
Allow SU permissions.
Success!
Reboot Recovery
*Phone Boots into CWM*

Is there anyway you can post a video or something of the process? Also, make sure you have the D2 Verison of Bootstrapper.

Nope. This didn't work either.

Son of a ****, I'm an idiot. Apparently I had the TAB version of Bootstrapper because thats the only one that shows up when you search the market for Bootstrapper...but if you search Bootstrap then the Droid 2 version shows up.

Thanks for the help. I finally got it to do what it was supposed to...its making a backup now.

Now I just need to know where the backup is located so I can copy it to my PC...

Nah, you're not an idiot at all! We all make mistakes (best way to learn) man. Its usually something simple and your issues weren't adding up. Glad its working now!
Good call Dustin!!!
