It took me a couple of tries as well. I ended up doing a hard reset (cleared data) and rooted via z4 and the root applied right out of the gate.

Rooted mine last night as well. Locked up the first try and worked on the next. Installed wireless tether and shootme. This is my first time rooting, any other useful root apps I need to look at? I don't want to uninstall anything without the sbf.
Not really too much more in terms of apps except screen capture. Now comes the wait for roms and themes. If you want one.

Here is a good article. I rooted mine with the Z4ROOT app just to get the wireless tether and screen cap capability.
There is a lot more stuff that can be done such as setting your CPU lower to increase battery life, etc.

How long did it take for z4root to work? I've left it running for ten minutes or so, and I'm seeing the circular waiting icon with a note at the bottom saying "Running exploit in order to obtain root access".
I don't want to reboot in the middle of a meaningful operation, but I also don't know how long this is supposed to take.

I got stuck like that, pulled the battery and tried again. I waited about 5 mins, i'm not very patient.
I ran Z4ROOT after booting back up and it says it's applying root or something like that after a few seconds so you know its working.

I'm using Wireless Tether and Shootme and both work great.
Tethered and ipad and ipod touch and worked on the first try. I only plan to use it sparingly but nice to have the option. The dev is Muller, Lemons, Buxton.
Shoot me is very easy to use, I've read most user comments and this is preferred over Drocap2.

So does wireless tether work without a kernel? I'm coming from a D1 which does not have netfilter in the Verizon kernal

I did the same. It totally slowed down my phone with screen rewrites coming to a virtual halt.
I suspect the exploit is a race condition of some sort.

I'm using both of those as well, and so far they both are great.
Regarding the wireless tether... What is the probability of Verizon catching somebody tethering? I've heard stories of people using massive amounts of data ie 20-30 gigs a month without getting caught, but on the other hand, I've also heard of people using small amounts and getting caught.
