rooting for dummies?

Im new to the whole rooting and hacks for the DROID x.. I believe I have the 2.3.4 version (im not extremely tech savvy so be gentle).. but I was wanting to know the pros & cons for rooting? And maybe get an easy to understand, for dummies type explanation.

pro: modify system files/settings, install custom roms, make complete backups

con: remove wrong system files/setting and have to flash a sbf

read and know how to boot to
bootloader and android recovery

if you have dx system 2.3.4 / 4.5.621
use magic md5 root for d2, d2g, dx, & dx2
