In a strange twist of fate, one of the most hotly anticipated, and hottest selling smartphones (in Japan), the Samsung Galaxy SII, is being held back from U.S. consumers right now. The Galaxy SII, which already sold more than 3 million units in Japan in just two months, is being held up by tougher than usual negotiations with carriers. It appears that the different carriers are weighing their options with all the strong competition from new HTC and Motorola phones. This has dragged out contract negotiations with Samsung to bring the "flagship" device to the States. It seems almost inconceivable that the device would be in this position, but a crowded field of advanced smartphones keeps pushing the U.S. release of this amazing phone further and further back. With the Motorola Droid Bionic about to hit stores next month, and a potential new iPhone from Apple likely coming in the fall, will it be "too little, too late" for the Galaxy SII?

I wonder if the Samsung vs Apple lawsuits have something to do with this...

All I know is I am looking forward to this device, I just hope it lives up to the hype.

Then again I would not be surprised if we see the vzw version in feb of next year.

Not that interested in the Galaxy S2 anymore. Maybe if it released this month, but with the bionic coming, Id rather go for that.

I'm beginning to understand how people slowly go insane. :icon_eek:

Ugh. Eligible for early upgrade, + I got my verizon deposit back... Was so excited when I saw this phone for the first time 4 days ago (been on the road for work the past 3 months =P)

This is like stealing candy from a baby, before its even in the babys hands!

Now I'm afraid to upgrade to anything, my luck Ill get a new phone and something 5 times better will come out the day after I can no longer return the phone.

I got a feeling its the lawsuit that causing the delay.

Someone made a good point. Would a carrier want to deal with the headache of having to remove them from stores almost as soon as it gets it if Apple gets its way?

Even if its not delayed totally, any type of delay is a win for Apple if this is cuz of the lawsuit.

I'm pretty sure Galaxy SII didn't do that well in Japan, if it was sold there at all. The 3 million units were sold in Korea, the home country of the manufacturer.

Frak everything about US carriers. Expensive service, tiered data, charging for sms, bloatware, restrictive contracts, disallowing roms, charging for tethering, blocking applications, strong-arming manufacturers... how much will we put up with?

(Answer: we're weak and they have won)

This is all very disappointing as I was looking forward to this device. Let's just say for the sake of conversation that Sammy has approached all the US carriers with the same offer...there has to be some central reason that they haven't adopted this phone. Could be the lawsuits with Apple. Maybe there is an injunction against these devices pending outcome of a trial or decision by the courts. Who knows, maybe these devices suck and we've all been blinded by Samsung advertising and the carriers are doing the right thing by their customers???? (ok I was going out on a limb with that last statement)

In any event, the countdown to the Bionic has started. :icon_ banana:

Looks like I'm getting a Bionic, after all. And, truthfully, after hearing that Moto upped the RAM to 1GB, I can no longer think of an overly compelling reason to choose S2 over Bio.
