Samsung epic and adb

I'm working on dev a new custom rom for epic I'm still fairly new but have a friend helping me get it down he devs for og droid and we cannot figure out why in linux adb does not pick up my device after running command adb devices just gets either blank insert were nothing displays our series of ?s with no permissions anyone know a fix
