I thought the same thing about how fragile the edge side of the phone is perceived to be. So far I have only read about one person breaking their edge.
I don't use my app drawer. I don't have multiple home screens. I don't have to have my screen lit up to see multiple notifications, switch music tracks, etc. My menu button is obsolete because my task switching is now on the sidebar. I'm loving this gimmick!
