Samsung is Supposedly Considering a Leasing Program for Galaxy Phones Just Like Apple's New Plan

Yeah, but I thought you were calling out Samsung, saying they should match THAT plan. That'll never happen. They'll be right on par with Apple.

Totally agree. Samsung will have to pull something out of their hat to be able to one-up everyone or I don't see their new plan working out.

Plus, the iPhone is unlocked. Samsung would have to do the same thing.

Actually, you have to sign up for carrier service before you leave the store. I don't think it locks them but it is kind of an annoyance. What if I haven't decided yet?

As for the bank, that is the only way you can get in the plan at the moment via Citizen One and there are severely limiting terms to keep that contract. For example, if you try to cancel Applecare+ you are no longer eligible to upgrade to the new iPhone because that's technically bundled with your contract. And guess what happens if you have issues? You go through the bank, not Apple which I know Apple fans are not going to be happy about.

I believe Samsung could do a good payment plan. They just need to be careful of the deals they do.

That's why it's just easier to go through the Carrier. I can walk into any of their stores and have an issue remedied.

I like where they are going with this, but I would prefer not to have to deal with a bank.

That's what I was saying when they rolled out the program. It just seem unnecessary in my opinion. Of course, I don't run a billion-dollar company either.

Idk. I'm assuming the carriers are making money off the top when they sell a device. If the oem's can sell the same device for the same price, they're not only getting what they do when it's bought through the carrier, they're also making what the carrier makes on top of what they send on to the oem.

I think it's all about being at the carrier's mercy. We have all been to a VZW, Sprint or TMO store and they are always pushing some specific model Promotions are usually subsidised by the OEM and a direct program gives them back control and of course additional profits.

Only if they sell it at full retail, then they probably make money just like a Best Buy would.

Otherwise, the wholesale prices have been $400-$500, so a subsidized phone actually does - just as it implies - cost the carrier money.

Except that you actually pay for that subsidized phone over the course of your contract, so if anything, they're making money.

Not off the phone, technically, even if they bump their prices to account for the subsidy (which would just mean they aren't losing money, which is correct). Paying for your subsidy is not the same thing as VZW making money on the phone.

Now Edge programs and the like are probably different charging $25 a month for the phone or whatever...although I'm not sure in most cases that doesn't actually just add-up to the wholesale price VZW was paying for the phone.

I get a discount on my monthly access charge for being on the Edge plan. Ie, that monthly access charge helps them recoup the difference between what they pay and the subsidized price they charge. Otherwise, why give that discount for being on the Edge plan?

There have been articles/threads on this forum and elsewhere where people did the math and a subsidized phone ends up costing you more in the long run. Sure, that might not go into VZW's books as a specific dollar amount that they made on the phone itself, but they're making plenty of money from you to cover the cost of the subsidy and service, and then some.

Either way, these financing plans from oems will put money directly in the oem's pocket instead of the carrier's and and the oems will have more control as Jeffrey said.

However......... if you do have to choose a carrier first, the OEM is most likely sending them their fair share of the profit.

Just got word last night that Verizon is going to be offering a 12 month trade-in option for the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus when purchasing on Device Payment (formerly known as Edge), presumably to try and combat Apple's program.
