SBF to root and to unroot

edit: all i can do at this point (the screen with exclamation point/triangle/phone is pull the battery. the phone will boot into the normal phone operation just fine.

Just a quick note that when at the "stock recovery" point/triangle/phone screen, you generally can power off by pressing and holding power, or pressing it a few times. This is a little different than how it works in SPRecovery/Clockwork so it makes it seem like you need to do a battery pull, but you shouldn't need to.

hahahahahhahah Holy Crap MotoCache1 is the F'in mannnn. hahahhahaaah Dood you rock. Sorry you had to right all that up man but that was awesome. Perfect step by step guide. Worked for me perfect. Im stoked now hahahahaaahhaa. Now I just have to find a good rooted 2.2 custom rom. You have any to suggest?? hahahaha you dont have to suggest any you can just tell me to go F off after all that time you spent writing up the guide for idiot noobs for me. hahahahaahaha. Thanks again man. I really appreciate it.:icon_ banana:

"Before you press Start - there will come a point when RSD Lite reboots your phone. You'll want to be watching for that point. As soon as you see it say that it's rebooting the phone, hold "up" on the dpad of the phone again."

MotoCache1, whatever this does, holding dpad-up when it starts rebooting, fixed it for me! in RSD Lite, i never received 100% "PASS" status - just 100% "In Process ..."

I just tried a third time - same procedures as everything else I've done, with the exception of hitting dpad-up when the phone rebooted after flashing the sbf. holding dpad-up brought me straight into SPRecovery! woo!

here's my next question. how do i go back to the stock recovery now? :) not that i want to right now, but i may in the future. thanks so much

Awesome! You'd be surprised to know that most people who have been flashing these things forever don't know to do that little step -- and they never get "PASS" and they just assume that's the way it is supposed to be. Perhaps your newer version of RSD Lite is even more sensitive to it.

Glad to be able to get you up and running.

Regarding the "stock recovery" - the standard answer is "blow away your phone and install the SBF of the version of Android you want". Of course that answer isn't much fun. Now that we can make SBF's of just about anything we want (I've had some developments in my SBF making capabilities that I haven't had the time to share yet), we can also make a "recovery only" SBF that has just the stock recovery image. Of course you'd want to use the right stock recovery for your build. So if you've got FRG01B you'd want the FRG01B stock recovery, etc.

Expect to see more SBF's added to our arsenal in the future...

hey his guide helped another noob (me) - the holding dpad up during the recovery reboot is what did it. what did it for you?

i am also interested now in a nice 2.2 custom ROM :) i've seen the most about sapphire, bugless beast & cyanogen "around" the forums / sites but i'm open to anything right now.

i just did a "simple" nandroid backup, and it looks like it backed up system and data, but that was it. i'm thinking i should do a full backup of everything though, just in case.

well now, this is very strange.

i had sprecovery going, did the backup in nandroid, and while in sprecovery, i told it to reboot phone. let it boot up, checked around, all looked good so i shut down and wanted to look at sprecovery again.

held X, powered on, holding x... it brings me to the exclamation point/triangle screen. ... >.> lol

pressed the power button a few times (thx for the tip!) to shut down. held up on dpad, powered up and now im back at the black screen: bootloader 2C.7C
Battery OK
OK to Program
Connect USB
Data Cable

lol what happened?! i swear i didn't touch anything!

edit: proof i'm not going crazy! booted up the phone again, used Astro app to go to /sdcard/nandroid/BDS-20100820-0640/ and inside i have 4 files: boot.img (3.50M), data.tar (157.53M), nandroid.md5 (131), and system.tar (122.41M). so apparently i lost sprecovery between the backup and rebooting.

hahahhaha yeah same exact thing worked for me. Had no idea it had to be back in the bootloader before 100% was reached. Now I can wait to try and insteall a rom and brick my phone hhahahhaha. So the rooting theory now is that you just need to put the update.zip file of the rooted rom you want on your sdcard after you made a back up of your current setup. Then go to sprecovery and allow/install it and boom you have root access?

Hey, I'm 2 for 2 tonight. I think that means I can go to bed now, right? :)

As far as a custom ROM goes, I'm boring. I went straight from stock ESE81 to installing SPRecovery and then putting on the FRG22 update.zip (which was already rooted). Other than putting on ChevyNo1's LV 1.1 GHz kernel, I'm pretty much good with it the way it is. My phone is super fast, lasts on one battery all day, doesn't get too hot, and is rock stable. What else could I want in a phone?

Wow that sucks. I just powered my phone off and back on holding x and Im back to the facotry recovery to. no more sprecovery. knew it was to good to be true. Things are never that easy for me. FML.

well skylord, i'm sort of happy that you're here too, and that we're doing the same things. i'm sure that if it was just me having all this happen, these guys wouldn't believe me lol!

hahahha yeah I hear ya. This is really weird I dont get how it worked and sprecovery was there and took over for the default but now its gone. I didnt even make a back up like you did. All I did was read your post saying that you made the back up and rebooted and it was gone. So i said no f'in way. Let me reboot my phone just to make sure sp is still there and boom right back to the stoopid triangle exclamantion point. Im getting sick of seeing that symbol hahahahahaahaha. Oh well Im off to sleep to dream about a better world where rooting a phone is easy for someone like me hahahahha. I will try again tomorrow. Catch you on here tomorrow probably. If you here anything from anyone let me know. Thanks dood.

Ok, so Verizon is sending me a new Droid today. I have to send the old one back within 10 days. I am rooted on my current phone. Do I need to unroot b/f I send it back to Motorola? If so how do I do that? I have ROM Manager Pro installed and I see where I can download stock 2.1. Can I install that and let it update OTA to 2.2 and everything will be stock? If not how do I make it so they dont know I rooted? Thanks in advance!

OP of this thread, option 1, then 4 then OTA

Dang. Guess I celebrated too early. Yep - that's pretty bizarre.

I just re-read part of your earlier post :

and that's actually different than what I usually experience. Usually when holding the dpad up after the "rebooting your phone" step, you should come back into the bootloader, not into Recovery. So something is definitely not right there.

Ochilly - I know you said you're on Windows Vista 64 bit. I can't ascertain from your post - have you ever flashed with this computer before? Do you have access to try it from an XP machine?

How about you skylordusa1 - what is your setup? You described what software and such you installed, so I'm guessing that you've never flashed with this computer before since you had to install everything from scratch.

There's a part of me that would want to blame my new SBF, but I and a few of the Rescue Squad guys have tested the SBF on our phones (I've flashed it many times on all sorts of versions of Android -- 2.0.1, 2.1, 2.2, etc.) with no trouble, so I'm not going to go there yet. I'm going to see if I can duplicate your results, but I've got 32 bit XP here and it's never had any trouble flashing before.

One thing you share in common, other than that you're both using the new SBF, is that you're both "stock OTA 2.2". I assume that means you actually got FRG01B over the air, not that you applied the FRG01B SBF. I'll flash the ESE81 SBF onto my phone, and then apply the OTA update.zip so I've then got basically the same phone as you. One difference will be that your phone (Chilly) is Bootloader version 2c.7c whereas both of my phones are 2c.6c. I'm thinking that there's something there of interest.

I'll do some playing and get back with you guys. Let me know the answers to anything I've asked above if you see this in the mean time.

Just a quick note -- I definitely think there is something to this. No specifics yet - just noting that, looking at the code of the OTA update, I think I'm on the trail...

Hey Moto thanks again for all the help. So far I have tried the flashing process
on two different 32 bit xp machines. A dell comp and a asus netbook. I have never flashed anything on either of them. And it didnt work on either untill you wrote that awesome guide last night which is when I tried it on my netbook and it worked. After I was in SPrecovery finally i didnt really do much like make backup or anything. I just selected reboot phone. It then booted up as normal. And then when I saw Ochilly saying his sp was gone. I turned down my phone and turned it back on holding x and it went right back to the default recovery. Yeah I got my droid back in november and never flash/installed/rooted or did anything to it besides the over the air updates that have been sent out all the way till now 2.2. So i am currently on the over the air frg01b build that verizon/motorola pushed out over the last few days.

actually I also just noticed that my bootloader is 2c.7c like ochilly. This means we are doomed doesnt it for getting the ota 2.2. Go ahead tell me be honest I can take it hahahahhhaaa.

EDIT: Just happened again. Was able to flash ok and get to sprecovery. but after turning my phone off then power up with x it went back to default recovery.
