SBF to root and to unroot

Thanks to Palantirion, skylordusa1, greeknasty, and 0chilly for testing out my new update.zip and procedures. Everyone was successful. I just need to make some tweaks to the documentation based upon feedback and I should be able to post all this tomorrow. It will be in its own topic and I'll put a post here linking to it.

Before I install any custom ROMs, I need to know how to get back to what I call "stock" at this point in time - i.e. 2.2 froyo.

I checked the original post but it seems the link in "Ok, I need to get back to a stock phone. how do I do this? (box option 04)" is broken, and would only bring me back to 2.01.

If there's a full stock recovery to 2.2 that would be great. If not, I have no problems going from 2.01 to 2.1 and then 2.2, but would request links to those files as well. There are so many links to so many download sites in almost every area of this forum and elsewhere, that it's confusing as to which I will need :)

My goals are to get rooted on 2.2 (done now, thanks to MotoCache1), perform an SPRecovery advanced nandroid full backup (done), and then to install a custom rom and play around with it, then see what happens when I restore my backup, and then ultimately bring it full circle by installing a fresh 2.XX and getting it back up to fresh/stock 2.2 with no root, no rom, nothing. I figure if I can get through all that with no major issues, then I can feel confident in keeping a ROM full time and then trying out some custom kernels =)

Thanks everyone!

There's an SBF file for bone stock 2.2. It wipes your phone clean though (other than SD card), but it's absolutely stock at that point. :)

OK, too much information.

I am getting a used Droid at 2.1

I will install Motocache1's SBF recovery as soon as its ready for prime time.
I assume this will unroot me.

I then wish to install FRG22 and want to run unrooted.

I found two sources for FRG22
Pete's download page and over in Droid World, one from P3
They are different sizes and I don't know which I should pick.

On another note, As A NOOB am I better off with odexed or deodexed?

That's going to start to be difficult. They are OTA updating even droids that have no phone service and have never been activated. If it's powered on, it gets the OTA.

It's ready. There has yet to be a single legitimate issue with it that I'm aware of.

I assume this will unroot me.
No. Which recovery image you're running technically has nothing to do with whether or not your OS is rooted. In fact, most (all?) of the custom recovery images are internally rooted -- which is to say that while you're in recovery you're root (when you ADB shell in, etc.).

I then wish to install FRG22 and want to run unrooted.

All of the FRG22 out there that I'm aware of has already been rooted. I'd love to find an untouched copy of the leak but I haven't seen it yet. I'm running the one off DroidWorld.

Odexed is the way the official updates are and will be faster. It however can't be tweaked and customized the way deodexed can. I run the odexed personally.

Hope that helps.

Never too much information. Usually, not enough.

Nope. SPRecovery (SPR) replaces the stock recovery files. You see, Android has a recovery program to get your phone working again if it becomes messed up for some reason (and to apply updates). SPR replaces that stock recovery program to allow you, the user, to install arbitrary "updates" to your phone.

These updates can grant you root user permissions (which is what rooting your phone is...if you're unfamiliar with Linux but are familiar with Windows, a root user is analogous to an administrator account on Windows).

MC1's SPR works fine. The only issue is with stock 2.2 phones, like mine, Stock (Over The Air) 2.2 has a feature that detects if the recovery files have changed and, if so, will change them right back.

That means that some of us have gone: "Yay! I've replaced the recovery files with SPR! I can root now. Hey! Where did SPR go? I'm back to stock. Sux."

Not that this is a bad thing. Any file can become corrupted. If the files you rely on to recover from bad files becomes, itself, corrupted...well, you can see how that might pose a problem. So a check of those files on start-up, with a hot patch if an issue is detected, is a good feature.

Unless you want to do something unconventional.

As a NOOB, just download the 2.2 OTA update file from here:

http://androidoverdrive.com/pete/OEM/9046f5a3ec09.signed-voles-ota-45394.zip

Straight off Peter Alphonso's private stock!

You'll have an unrooted, stock, official, 2.2 FRG01B installation, ready to go.

EDIT:

FRG22 is a leak, so it's not official and if you install it the OTA notifications will start shortly thereafter, and if you accept the OTA file it will bring you to FRG01B anyway. Since you want stock, cut out the middleman.

Wow Thanks for the responses.
First off. MotoCache1, I certainly did not mean to impeach your good work on the SBR recovery module. What I meant by "ready for prime time" was when the patch and instructions to make the change permanent was available. Sorry for any misunderstanding.

Second, I subscribe to Page Plus instead of Verizon, so I am not sure if I would even get the OTA update from 2.1.

And Lastly, if I understand correctly, once I have applied the sbrecovery, I can load P3's FRG22 and get an unrtooted 2.2 which will not be OTA updated even if I Page Plus was pushing the OTA.

EDIT change the last line to : I can load P3's FRG22 and get an rooted 2.2 which will not be OTA updated even if I Page Plus was pushing the OTA.

Edit. I think I am beginning to understand, If the release you have installed is unrooted, then no matter which update you install, you will still be unrooted and vica versa. Is this correct?

Let me try this one more time. I have completely misused rooted and unrooted .Thats what happens when you post first thing after getting up in the morning.

What I want is to wind up with is a rooted frg22

If I have a stock Un-rooted 2.1 or OTA frg01b and I install MotoCache1's SBFRecovery and then flash either Droidwords FRG22 Odexed or Pete's FRG22 Odexed I will wind up with a rooted 2.2

Does this dense Newb finally have it right?

Okay, I got 4.5.3 of RSD lite, and my cell phone model is not showing up.

I appear to be in the correct mode by holding down the D pad. It says: "Bootloader 2C.7C"

Battery OK
OK to Program
Transfer mode: USB

Any ideas guys? I need help fast.
