I really would like to have the Nexus S notification bar, do you have to be rooted?

They're actually part of the MIUI rom. You can easily change things like icons, status bar, locksreen, and dialpads with the theme manager app included in the rom. This is my first time trying this rom and I must say, its a nice change from the norm and has endless customization options.
