SD Card Storage Low..But Not Really?

I keep getting that little icon in the top left hand of my screen telling me that my phone space is low. But I have exactly 26.95MB of available space on my internal phone storage, and 11.53GB on my SD card?

Why is it that when I install an app that is only 3.5 mb large, my phone prompts me with this??? It's not only annoying, but my SMS messages then get rejected because of space.

if i remember right the droid warns you of that when you go below 30mb free internal storage

I can understand that, but why can't I get any incoming text messages right below 30mb? How much can a text take up?
