Sorry just saw your post. I am rooted but you don't need to be to change icons. You can use folder organizer from market to change icons or a different launcher like go launcher or adw which allow you to change icons.

cool, thanks. I've tried several launchers and just don't like them as much as Sense. guess I'm the odd one I'll try folder organizer

Yea I switch back to Sense every once in a while too. It's my favorite interface out of all the manufacturers skins.

You don't have to be rooted to change your icons. There is a free app called Desktop Visualizer -- it will let you assign an icon of your choosing in place of the default icon.
