*sigh* HTC Incredible...bad reception

I too have a dead spot in my home. Poor reception and sound quality also noted on the INC. My wife's MDroid was much better. The other day I had to put it on speaker to get a contact for a friend, Viola! Thing was crystal clear. Go figure, just my experience..

Have you tried *228 to see if programming helps. Try it before you return it.

You know...people always say this, especially verizon customer service, but I'm serious - has this *ever* improved someone's reception on a phone they received in the last month?

Yes, it actually has for quite a few people. And no matter what its always worth a try at the least.

I mean, is there a thread anywhere you could link to where you know someone who said they did *228 on a phone they bought in the last month (not something that was years and years old) and improved their reception?

Every time I get a new phone and it has bad reception (which happens with about 50% of my phones - I keep moving, and somehow I keep ending up in borderline receptions areas...though that's another story) the person at verizon tells me to do the *228 thing, and having gone through...probably 10 phones (well - only half of them I complained about), never has it made the slightest bit of difference. :-(

trade it for a moto droid, or return it and wait for one of the new moto droids.

Moto Droid gets about the same reception.

There are a couple threads here where it has helped people. Sometimes the phone doesn't pick up all the towers when it is first activated. The reason everyone tells you to do it is because that is the easiest and most simple solution and if it doesn't work then it could be a defective phone and that's how they determine it. In most cases it is just the persons area.

Sounds like you might have a bad phone. My Incredible only has 99-101 dBm in my basement, but the reception and call quality is perfect

I left At&t because the reception in my house was terrible and I was constantly dropping calls and calls would go straight to my VM but I have found that with Verizon and my Incredible I am able to get crystal clear reception and not one dropped call. What a huge difference for me. I was a little nervous when I read that people had problems with the Incredible. But even synced with my car stereo calls are great.

I have a similar problem: no dropped calls but during some calls there are periods where me and the person on the other end can't hear each other. Bars don't affect it. Additionally, my Incredible drops to 1X occasionally. One other weird thing is that there's this Apple store that I go into frequently where I get no cell signal at all. I don't kow if it's just a bad phone or what.

I'd just like to throw out there that I have almost no issues with the DINC's reception. At work I get in teh range of -100 to -105db, which is terrible, and it sometimes drops to 1X. But most phones, including blackberries have issues ni my office.

BUT, if i'm doing better than -100 (say in the -90's) I do very well. I am coming from an Omnia, which I found myself saying "what was that?" a lot.

It is possible that these phones have a couple different radio chipsets due to costs or production speeds, locations etc... Unfortunately, I don't think there is any way to check what differences there may be in the hardware.

I am 100% happy with this phones reception.

I have seen some threads in the verizon forums where users were able to get far better quality and reception if they didn't block the back of the phone with their whole hand while on the phone. Try holding it to your head differently to minimize the amount of covered space on the phone.

fyi, I did try this myself when I had the phone and while it made a difference in the db readings while the phone was sitting in my hand, it didn't help (or it didn't help enough to get back to the level of my old phone) while I was on a call. I tested it a couple of times at home while on a regular conversation.

FYI - I just got off the phone with level 2 tech support at Verizon. They said there are 2 "known issues" with the Incredible - 1) Bad battery life (supposed to have 100+hours standby). My battery life with light usage has been 8 to 10 hours, 12 at best. 2) Poor call quality - apparently, there is a bulletin that Verizon tech received acknowledging that the Droids (YES..ALL of them) have had poor call quality over the past few days. The sound quality of my particular Inredible has been pretty lame since the day I got it about 1 month ago (I pre-ordered and got it launch day). Hard to hear people during calls and sound volume seems to fluctuate, cutting out at times, requiring me to say way to often..."What???". Seems that the call volume modulation is whacky. Go figure. Bottom line for me: I'm receiving a replacement Incredible. They say it will be a refurb but I'm thinking that it's too early in the life of these things to be a refurb...it will likely be a new unit.

Good luck!

fyi, I believe refurb's include returned phones such as mine which people (such as myself) ordered, but then returned before the 30 days was over.

I live out in the sticks of Oklahoma and have great reception, thank you Verison and HTC. So much better than at&t.
