I've looked for this answer before and never found it...

I've had my droid for a bit.. ROOTED my droid.. went back stock/back to root enough times now.. i know what i'm doing when it comes to that..

MY question is.. I just got a replacement phone.. Can i just restore a back up from when my phone was rooted OR do i have to go through the root process THEN restore the back up again??

if the backup was made in clockwork or SPRecovery youll need to root to restore that. custom recoveries wont work unless ur rooted.

This is getting old!! lol, this is the second phone i've had to do this phone in two days.. plus having to flash stock sbf's so that i can return the others...

oh well! thanks for your help!!!

Well if nothing else you will be a pro at flashing sbf's by the end of all this, haha.

There are rooting apps on the market to root through the bluetooth hack I think thats what they are using at least but point is that you do not need to use the SBF flash to root now though I only recommend rooting this way if you already know how to do the SBF methods

1. Use app
2. Flash recovery though rom manager
3. reboot into recover
4 restore and enjoy

Like Abe said, if your backup is CW then you must root 1st to install CW.

But if you make a backup with SPR 1st then all you have to do is flash the SPR only.sbf on the new phone and restore your backup.
