You don't need to know how to do it or need to do it for that matter. Most that do it are doing so just to gain more control over their phones. I have never felt the need to do this and I have done many OS updates on my phones even including ones that were never released to the public. Root is good if you want to try customized ROMS as well as making changes to the stock setup of the phone. Beyond that if it is something you would never feel comfortable doing or your phone works fine for you the way it is, then don't worry about.
