Speaker phone and texts...

I just noticed today when im in speaker phone I cannot pull down the notification menu to check received texts and possibly reply. I cud do this with my OH droid, incredible, resound, and my wife's stratosphere. Is there some trick to doing this or is it something ics just didn't allow?
