Static IP for S4 with use of home router?

It just a matter of time before it DOES become a big deal. I would check now and them for a firmware update for the router.

Ok, firm update for the router is no good at least until I talk to frontier. Looks like they have custom firmware on it. Switching to TKIP was causing both our laptops to randomly disconnect, but while on AES it was fine (would rather have the phone problem then laptop disconnects). Did a little more digging tonight online and came across some suggestions of changing the bandwidth/ Mine was was set for 20Mhz for 2.4Ghz and 40Mhz in 5G. I have swapped so they are both now 20Mhz and so far so good on the phone. The phone had not seem to act up yet and usually after a few rounds of Candy Crush it does and none so far.

Well after 5 days with the above swapped (as bolded) this has fixed my disconnect/connecting problem on my network. I no longer see the message at all. Router has also been back on AES encryption and laptops are staying connected as well. So a big thanks for all the suggestions and helps. I do think Samsung may have an issue on their hand, but my guess it is low priority to being fixed.

I'm glad you figured out a way to get it working but I don't think Samsung should automatically take the blame. There was a similar issue with 2 D-Link model routers and a D-Link firmware upgrade solved the problem. Had nothing to do with the S4 directly. Chipsets and firmware change and the routers need to adapt.

Possibly, but out of all the 6 Smart phones in the house that I have had connected to the router, the S4 is the only one I have had that had issues with this router. All the others had been fine with the router worked with no problems. The S4 on the other hand was not so nice and when I started researching it I noticed it was not just my router manufacturer but there were other brands as well that people were having problems with. Hopefully if people are having issues they can see this solution and give it a try and see if it works for them as well.

Your statement and problem is more common than you think. I am on a tablet forum and the same statement "everything else works" comes up at least once a week. Just because 10 devices work does NOT mean the 11th is supposed to work because the others do. The various manufacturers are using different, (sometimes newer), chips and different, (sometimes custom) firmware in their Android devices. That doesn't necessarily mean they have messed up. Keeping up with tech advances is a never ending battle.

I can agree with that. It just seemed that there were some issues out there more than normal, but then I was looking for an answer so I was seeing a lot of different threads with issues similar to mine with different setups but with the same phone. Oh well my problem is fixed and other than that the S4 has been great for me. It's been a huge upgrade over my bionic :p I was going to hold out until the Note 3, but the Bionic was giving me fits right around when the S4 dropped and I couldn't wait until this fall for the note 3.

I have connected to every one of my customer's WiFi routers plus several guest systems, probably 30+ in all with my AT&T S4 without the first problem. We're talking about a ton of different routers but most of my customers are using different routers but pretty much the same security WPA/WPA2 TKIP.
