Status bar doesn't show new text info anymore

I have a Verizon S4. Prior to the last the latest OS update, when I received a text, it would show who the text was from and the first part of the text when I pulled down the status bar. Now it just says "new message". Is there any way to change it so it shows the message info again?

Are you using the stock messaging app?

There used to be a setting for that. I believe it was actually in the app itself.
