after you do the SBF your phone will be in "out of the box" condition.
which means when you turn it on you'll go through the entire setup process, including the OTA activation.

Naw you SBF it, then you do a factory reset and clear the cache, then reboot, and it'll prompt you to activate your phone. You just press activate and choose option 1. Your X will be like it was day one from the factory with all of your SD card intact, sign in to google and you'll get all your contacts and apps back. If it boot loops after the SBF when you restart it, just pull the battery, and then when you put it back, hold power and the home button to do the factory reset.

What about this

Official DX Gingerbread 2.3.3 (4.5.596) Release Thread - Something for everyone

can I just follow these steps

ou must follow the directions exactly to the letter, if you do not I can not guarantee the results. Please do not post questions here if you have not read the directions below. Before beginning ensure that you understand the directions that you have read.

Good now that you have read above the you are ready to proceed.

1. Your phone must be in the following condition before you can use the patched updater.

1.Your phone is running the 2.3.340 official Froyo Firmware
2.Your phone has been rooted
3.Your phone is using the Droid2 Bootstrap program (Do Not Use DroidX Bootstrap)

Install part 1 and then part 2 before leaving recovery!!

OK I just SBF'd and am now stock Froyo 2.2.1 2.3.340 w/e w/e

Should I wait for OTA? Is there an auto root device like z4 for the OTA yet?

What are my other options...

I mean I'd like to get comfy with it, I saw this post Official DX Gingerbread 2.3.3 (4.5.596) Release Thread - Something for everyone

but since there are several sets of instructions I am unclear which one I need to follow...

Re-root and install the two part file. You'll be fine.

Alright so help me out here...
Re-install z4 root, and root the phone (O.K I can handle that)

But then it says I need Droid2 Bootstrap program
I already paid for Droid X - do I need to pay again, and is this accurate I have to use the Droid2 Bootstrap?

Then, I download the 2 files, and put them on my SD card, restart into Bootstrap recovery and then what from there, if you can give me steps greatly appreciated.

Re-root using Z4. It might take a couple of tries and reboots, but it will work.

If you bought Clockwork for the X you can download it for the 2 from their website, OR you can use the version you have if you turn USB Debugging OFF.

Download the two files to your SD Card. The file names on the two files are too long to see in recovery so you might need to shorten their names so you can be sure to do part 1 first and part 2 second.

In Clockwork recovery run the two files (no reboot or anything between them).

If your phone boots up fine after that you're ok. If it bootloops then just go back into recovery and do a factory reset.

Good luck.

Google search DROID2 bootstrap.apk. Or, PM me your email address and I will send it to you.
