Sync with Outlook?

Alk,

I got you on that. I understand the needs of people to not have their data on others' servers.

For me, I'd like to keep my data out of the cloud, but it's just to limiting for me and I'm spoiled with the wireless sync.

Actually, when it comes to this security, I would kind of see it like this:

1.) I either put my data on their servers and trust that they are doing all they can to keep it secure

or

2.) I setup my own snyc server and have to worry about securing it and the web server its on myself.

Neither make me feel completely warm and fuzzy and with Wirelss sync, I alway know I have my data where ever I am.

Yup, you just enter your Exchange or IMAP server login info and you are good to go! I did the whole thing in 15 seconds. It works this way for other email as well. It handles this better than any phone I have ever used.

+1 for USB cable-based sync. Not all Outlook users are connected to Exchange servers, and not all that are have the type of setup that allows those Exchange servers to sync wirelessly. Outlook is very often used as a stand-alone PIM and connects to all types of email systems via POP3, IMAP, etc. whether Exchange or not. Using the USB cable in this setup allows your contacts, tasks, notes, calendar, etc. all to sync to the device and none of it travels through the cloud. This missing ability is the reason I am NOT a Droid user right now. I am waiting the rest of the year to see what else pops up and to see if this shortcoming is addressed either on the Droid, the Passion or some other Android flavor. I'm not in a hurry and in the case of newer technology taking your time before jumping in usually pays off (IMHO). As someone else said, "I need a tool, not a toy."

I agree, I'm just dumfounded that they would push out a smartphone like this that cannot do the fundamental business data syncing, wether it be via USB cable or Wirelessly.....

Seems you should have taken all the money you spent on the "idon't" advertising and used it to make the phone more usable for us the consumer!! Someone did a poor job on this project....

I'm Outlook standalone as well. A few comments though about this:

1) Standalone outlook users have to get their email from somewhere and send it to somewhere. For example, I pop mine off my web hosting server and send it to the web hosting smtp server. Yes, pop pulls it off the server, but there's nothing to say it isn't in a "cloud" of backups, etc.

2) For standalone outlook contacts and calendar, this is a different story. But, for me, routing contacts and calendar through google servers doesn't really bug me. I'd still prefer standalone sync through USB (actually I like bluetooth even better and used it on my Treo 650 with Hotsync), but I can deal with this.

3) The real issue for me is that without a true email sync program, I can read my email via pop on my Droid with a copy left on the server, so the inbox in my .pst file in Outlook still receives all my mail. But, any mail I send from my phone goes straight to the SMTP server and there is no way to pop sent mail off a server and back into my outlook. So the only solution is to cc or bcc myself on every message. A royal pain in the a$$.

A full standalone sync that would copy everything from outlook to my phone and vice versa is a much cleaner solution. And, this is something I and others will be willing to pay for (given the uproar internet-wide over this "feature" of the Droid). So, I'm fully confident that it'll be a couple of months, if not a couple of weeks before we see something that works very well via USB (and hopefully bluetooth). Until then, I'm happy dealing with the sent mail pain in the a$$ in return for junking my Treo 650.

The benefits of being a first adapter to a new technology are inseparable from the costs of dealing with it's weaknesses. Nothing is ever flawless the on the first try or it would never be released. Have some patience in the developer community. This phone is good enough to gain critical mass and once it has it, capitalism will allow software that makes it unbelievably good to be developed and released. Google and Verizon are counting on that model and in my opinion, they made a good business decision to release the phone as is so the developers can get to work. This phone is damn good and will only get better from here.

This sort of goes with the syncing with Outlook, but does the Droid work with VPN? Basically, if we are not connected directly to my company's network, we have to log in using VPN to get our e-mails and calendar.

Is there a VPN program for the Droid and can you log on using 3G or does it have to be Wifi only?

A solution for your mail may be IMAP. Do you have that option? IMAP keep a single set of emails, managed from multiple devices. You don't have to manage both sets.

Now, I COMPLETELY disagree with you on the "let them get it out and develop it".
A new OS is not really "new technology". If this is the case you are saying my Wireless sync from 4 years ago is somhow "new stuff" today.

Capitalism? With Obama at the wheel, don't you mean socialism? You'll be taxed per email before the lefties are done in office!

What you are saying is that you are satisified with an incomplete smart phone. They (Verizon and Google) could have EASILY put in a simple app to handle this, this stuff has been around for years!!! I have a 4 year old phone that uses all sync perfectly!

Is Java old technology?

Don't be complacent and accept half-complete consumer goods, or that is what you will get every time! Should you have to pay extra for features that worked great on your last smartphone?

Complain to Verizon and Google so they stop putting out incomplete goods!

I agree that the phone is good, it just is missing things that should be standard.

Ok as a 20+ year Verizon user, and all there other names of the past, and an addicted iPhone junkie with AT&T as well. I need a dependable phone as well as a smart phone for everything else. Why is it so complicated to do the following;
1, set ringtones for specific contacts
2, sync with my computer.
3, one button speed dials, driving and scrolling sucks!

I have to ask some questions. I use this device all day. It synced directly to my companies email server and IMAp works just fine. So I can read on the device and it is read on my desktop.

Since we know flash is coming maybe even the first quarter 2010 why is that a problem for you? We knew before relase it wasn't included.

I'm not sure about WMP but since I only use WMP i hope I can play music when I decide it's time to download. Slacker works better for me most fo the time!

Now here's the thing. People ARE buying this device now. Our local VZW sotre ahs sold 200 units already! The aren't waiting. Google has thier name on it. VZW is just the carrier. They DIDN"T hold back any features. They let it go as Google saw fit.

If you knew it had flaws you couldn't live with. Then why buy it? Buying a first generation tech. has always been "buggy" just look at the Storm or Tour or the IPhone .

Something else to consider

I know this is still in the cloud, but at least not the SkyNet (google) cloud. Exchange synce works really well from what i've seen. Many people offer Hosted Exchange services. This should provide all the syncing you guys need. Again, its still on someone elses servers, but I would rather have my data with someone like Godaddy or the like, vs. Google that everyone knows is using all of the data it collects.

I too wish there were some other option for cloud free wireless syncing.

We were not talking about email sync here. We were talking about Standalone outlook Sync of Calendars, contacts, Tasks, & Notes.

It connects fine to POP3 accounts, I am however having an issue with it handling my AOL IMAP account. It gives false notification of new mail, and some messages are not showing up.

Flash has been around for how many years, maybe 6-10? And they can't somehow incorporate non-version 10 into the system? They get an F for this.

How many websites use flash, a million or more? If you like waiting for things that have been around for years, go ahead an wait. Flash is a STANDARD in today's web experience! How can be be OK with it missing?

You can download and play MP3 fine...out of the box, you CAN'T click a WMP button and have it stream to the device, same goes for real player.

I and probably million of others, goto sites, click the button and listen to audio streams.

Maybe you don't click an listen to the stream links, but I do and I should not have to wait and pay for an app do be able to do these STANDARD web browser things.

People are buying them, I have one too. And, I have read that many have NOT purchased due to its short commings mentioned here with business data.

I have one because my old phone is dead.

If Verizon let Google push out a phone that is missing CORE FEATURES OFFERED ON SMART PHONES 4 LONG YEARS AGO, it's VERIZONS fault!

Google does not own the world (yet), they got involved in a project with 2 other MAIN STREAM partners.....Good Hardware from Motorola, and the best NETWORK with Verizon.....Partners work together on projects....Verizon let this thing sell missing major Features that their old smartphones have....

First Generation? I believe Android is now upto 2.0 (Ya know, cupcake, lemon bread, twinkie), and has had devices on the market for ah, at least 2-3 years (don't hold me to this, cause I don't know for sure)

No matter how you slice it, it's still sour dough.

Actually, if you want to sync with Outlook (a Microsoft product), you may want to go to one of those cool, new WinMo phones running WinMo 6.5. It will sync up with outlook OUT OF THE BOX because it uses a Microsoft OS.

Android is a Google OS... so it syncs with Gmail OUT OF THE BOX.

My Storm didn't have flash support either. The OS was terrible for a long time too.

If VZW held the release of the phone. Then you would say its VZW's fault for holding Google back or waiting on what should have been released and it's late. Google's choice is open sourced. It's Google's OS. VZW is just the carrier. VZW didn't resrict this at all

Yes Adroid 2.0 is all new. This isn't cupcake or sliced bread! This is 2.0. HTC will be releasing 2.0 also on the Passion. It will come along fast. If you wanted proven with no bugs you could have bought a G1 or Iphone!
