T-Mobile's Legere Calls Users Who Exploit Tethering Workarounds 'Thieves' and Vows to Throttle Them

Man 2TB is A LOT but what gets me is that they sell the plan as unlimited and then when you use it as such they get peo'd. If you have unlimited buffet and I eat all the pizza don't get upset because that's how you set it up. Just try and word it different for the new people and be thankful you have customers who don't leave you for the next big thing.
Did you read the article, they have unlimited data plan for the mobile phone, and 7 GB MAX tethering plan, they use 2 TB tethering, these are people who use their tethering plan for home and business Internet, anyone who thinks otherwise is quite naive.
No one on this planet can use 2 TB on the cellphone alone, on a consistency basis, does anyone here know what it takes to use 2 TB on your mobile phone. This is blatant abuse, sorry. I am on Verizon's unlimited data plan and also tether, but I never go over 10 GB a month, the most I ever used was 10 gigs once, I pay for Internet connection for my home "and use wifi when I am at home or family and friends homes". Sorry but 2TB is absurd, these people are running their business and home Internet using hacks to go above and beyond their alloted tethering plan they SIGNED up for.

It is being reported that T-mobile will throttle any users to unusable 2g speeds if they go over 21GB in a given month with no specification that you must be tethering that data! This is a far cry from the 2TB example that John gave to justify this.

Verizon has already been slapped on the wrist by the FCC for trying this game. It won't stand.

Abusers must be stopped, they signed a contract, which means they must abide by the rules and regulations written in that contract, these people used tethering to burn up all that data, there is no way to sugar coat this, these are blatant abusers.

The federal government has stated that throttling is not going to be permitted as a way to stop abuse. T-Mobile is going to have find another way to punish abuse or face heavy penalties from the fcc
Fair or not, right or wrong, big brother has spoken in no uncertain times on this issue

I wonder if T-mobile will skate around that since it is clearly stated in the agreement you sign. Where it says you get 5gb of LTE speeds and you will be throttled back once you go over. Unlike with At&t and VZW where people were grandfathered into unlimited data T-mobile new customers agree to those terms and being that is this case the government should not be able to intervene.

Since I don't have T-Mobile and lost my unlimited data on Verizon, this is

However,

<Paraphrased Quote> People are rooting their phones, writing malicious code, and using apps to hide their abusive tethering usage from us so we can't know who's doing it. We're going to punish those people who are doing this because we know exactly who you are.</Paraphrased Quote>

That's generally true. You can't randomly throttle someone just for excessive data use. However, this doesn't mean you have to allow unlimited tethering. You'd have to determine people are going beyond their throttling limits conclusively (which may not be that cheap or easy), and then I suppose you could hit them with overages but maybe not throttle.

If they could throttle you just when you were tethering, that could probably fly. But as soon as they mess up and throttle someone who was just using a lot of data but not throttling, then the FCC might take issue.

If I remember correctly, VZW didn't have to allow unlimited users to tether - it was in the TOS and they sold separate tethering plans. But the FCC said on limited data plans they couldn't block tether.

The contract is clear 7 GB for TETHERING, I don't underrated all this spinning going on.

I guess the main issue is that, people are not sure if there is a definitive way to show whether data was used just on the phone or through tethering. So, say someone uses the 21GB limit just on their phone ALONE, without tethering, but then they get throttled. Is there an actual way for these companies to tell what data is being used on the phone itself vs through tethering?

Tmobile stated that they have created a way to see through people hiding their tethering vs mobile data usage. So yes, they can now tell who is legit.

Or so they claim. It's always been theoretically possible....either way, it doesn't seem VZW ever saw it worth doing.

They weren't very forthcoming about which method they evolved to be able to differentiate tethered vs mobile, but to me it's a non-issue as I don't bypass tethering agreements.

This. You can kick the can around as much as you want, but you didn't sign up for unlimited tethered data. Unlimited is for your phone. If you have the time to sit around all day and watch unending Netflix shows then more power to you. On your phone. If 7GBs of free tethering isn't enough for you then something is wrong.

When you are tethering to a PC you have a lot more going on than just browsing. People will abuse things and then cry wolf after. He should not throttle them. They should kick them off of the network completely.

Exactly... People using that much data are just trying to work the system and get out of paying for a home ISP, so they fire up a hotspot and rape their mobile plan to power their other devices.

It is theft in that regard.

Now, if you are using 30GB a month on an unlimited plan, and you tether and that is part of it, I wouldn't expect Tmo to bust your stones... But a lot of people really abuse it and bring attention to it because they are too cheap to just get internet, and that ends up being what closes the door for everyone...

It is like this with everything... a tiny but highly visible minority gets all the attention and everyone else that doesn't abuse it bears the brunt of it... Today it is data plans, or when someone goes off the deep end and shoots up a theater. Less than 0.005% of legal gun owners ever kill anybody... And yet, the other 99.995% of us have to put up with more red tape, more restrictions, more controls, etc...

It isn't any different in most regards. A few bad apples spoils the bunch for everyone else...

All I'm saying is, he's crying just like VZW did. And for all it's chest thumping, power and resources, VZW never really pursued it. Maybe TMo will terminate these customers, but otherwise I think he's making empty threats.
