TB in the mail!

So I've had my OG for a little over 2 years now. A friend of mine helped me root it old school style with terminal emulator. I played with it and overclocked the heck out of it. I ended up bricking it, a real brick, and got a new one. I rooted that and have been using it with Bugless for a long time now. BUT the time has finally come. I ordered my TB last night. Should have it Tuesday. I do plan on rooting and custom ROM, and of course overclocking it. In OG land, the majority of the people that I knew were all about Petes Bugless Beast. It was pretty sweet! What do the majority of TB owners like for ROM? Pretty excited to get started! Any suggestions or warnings I should know about?

Well, you haven't had the og for a little over 2 years since it came out November of 2009...but either way, have fun with the bolt. It's a beast. I highly recommend rooting it the "long" way like you did with the og. Makes things a lot easier to fix if you bork things up since you know your way around adb. At this point I would say the most popular rom around here (and a VERY popular rom over at xda) is DasBAMF. the current stable version is 1.6.3 and is froyo based. There is however a gingerbread alpha version that has bits and pieces of sense 3.0 (the version seen on the evo 3d and htc sensation) such as the awesome lock screen. That build is currently on version 2.0.4.1 and despite a few little quirks is running fantastic for me. Overall, the best advice I can give us to try a bunch of different roms and kernels and see what works best for you.

Thanks! I'm doing some research now, trying to get a path put together for rooting. I found a thread "ADB for dummies". Haven't read all the way thru, but looks like that might be the step by step playbook fort rooting a TB?

Maybe I was thinking two years because I got my discount for upgrading??? Long enough anyway.

Yeah I got my thunderbolt about a month ago, upgrading from the OG Droid. I was in your same position when I got my Tbolt, I'm liking the Das BAMF Rom (according to my sig) and the stock bamf kernel. Runs about 1.5 ghz. It runs really smooth and stable for me. And definitely root the adb way, I did it as well. It took awhile, but it was worth it. Learned a thing or two in the process

I found a 2 part you tube video for rooting the abd way. It looks like it shouldn't be to tough. The one thing I'm worried about is my laptop is a little older, and running xp. I hope that doesn't turn it into an issue?

I haven't decided if I want to root yet, my main motivation last time was because my droid will slow, but this bad boy right here is much faster than my rooted droid.

Victory!!!

Done and done. Rooted the new TB on day 1!!! I tried using the method in the video I linked earlier, but I kept running into road blocks. The links shown in the video were not coming up, so I found this method.

[Procedure] How to Root the Thunderbolt with ADB (Windows) - Android Forums

It is very descriptive and very do-able. It does take some time and I had to reboot my TB a few times and redownload the PG05IMG files a few times, but it is done. I downloaded superuser from market and tested it with Shootme just like the link says to do.

I'm going to start researching ROMs and how to load them tomorrow. Sounds like the BAMF is the most popular.

One thing I have noticed is before I rooted I had a strong 2 bars 4gLTE signal strength. (my house has always had weak reception), and now its only at 1 bar? Is there something else I need to do to increase that to at least as good as it was stock? I've been considering installing a repeater here at the house, but was unsure of the 4gLTE band. Looks like they have them out now, at a premium price too!

Anyway. Your input about my signal strength and installing custom ROMs is greatly appreciated!
Thanks!!!
