text message readout in status bar

How do you prevent incoming text messages from reading out in the status bar? I have tried turning the status bar notification off but then the phone does not notify me at all when I get a text. I would like to be able to get the notification but not have the message read out in the status bar. Is there anyway to do this?

Use a 3rd party app for messaging like handcent or Go sms
