The horse has been dead for many many posts now. We are just debating in circles here. We are all entitled to our opinions as right or wrong as they may be.

The issue with google voice is different, Google voice is not a direct competitor to apple's operating system. They would be intentionally preventing someone from using software just to harm a competitor, rather than compete. Thats a big no no. The difference is the android app provides only information about android, a direct competitor. The other apps that feature android among other tech info is different, because they would be censoring all of the other information.

And yes, obviously apple is a publicly traded company. You say it like no one knows it. However, apple is owned by people, as opposed to the internet which is free. So in that regard, it would still be public vs private. I can go out and walk in a public street. I can't just walk into apples headquarters, regardless of whether or not it is publicly traded

yeah i dont understand why "apple is a publicly traded company!!" is being touted as some sort of revelation. it is owned by people who make the policies for that company. if you want to participate in that company as a dev, as an employee, or even as a janitor, you have to follow their policies. being publicly traded doesn't mean it's open to the public to dictate what happens in the company. whether or not it has a stock symbol is irrelevant.

Sigh. Kind of a real stretch to make a distinction with Google Voice, which is run by the MAKER of Android, don't ya think?

A public company is public by definition, you're twisting to say it's "private" because people own it doesn't make any sense nor do I see how it's even relevant to the discussion. Public companies are more regulated and I don't understand what is so difficult to grasp about that concept.

A competitor to Craftsman tools wants to sell in your store. You say no. You cannot do that. Sears here would be using it's vertically integrated and monopolistic power to damage competition of a related business.

Yes they can. It's not an anticompetitive practice unless is substantially reduces competition. If sears were the only company that sold tools, then yes it would we be an unfair advantage. Fortunately I can go to walmart, lowes, or home depot if I wanted and buy those same tools. This company can develop it's Android News app for the android platform, blackberry, nokia, or WP7. Furthermore, apple isn't providing any android only news apps, nor is it providing one that the company personally maintains. So in the case of the market for android news apps on the iPhone, that market doesn't exist. You can't have anticompetitive practices in a market that doesn't exist.

I said "stay with me" in that post, but I guess I lost you at "assume Sears is the only distributor of tools on the East Coast". It was a hypothetical to illustrate a point.

This app competes with other news apps, such as Engadget among others, that are allowed in the app store. The Iphone user base represents a huge share of the smartphone market, so in that regard the developer is, in fact, arguably harmed by the arbitrary exclusion. Unintended consequence or not, whether Apple profits or not, doesn't change the fact that the action can cause economic harm. In the Netscape case, MS didn't even block it they just gave their own IE a much more favorable position and that was enough for the DOJ to balk at.

Again, the FCC smelled a rat when Apple tried to block Google Voice. I don't know what could be clearer in the message sent there. Apple is the gate keeper to a market which all developers/companies should be free to access. It's precisely this sort of conflict of interest when companies use that market power in anti-competitive ways that causes harm to other companies that leads to sanctions and break-ups of companies.

Thread clean up. I understand some of the resentment towards Apple but you guys are taking it too far. Darksider, tone it down. Let's be sensitive to the fact that not everyone hates apple. I own apple products and I found the remarks insulting. But the only reason i edited it was I'm getting complaints from other people. So either tone it down or don't say anything at all.

Yes dear. Ooh and it's Darkseider with an "e". So I won't call you B*** but I will call you Hook. :)

Sorry sweetheart. I'm getting old and it's hard to remember these important things.
