This is probably a stupid question but do I need the in store verizon reps in any way to activate my nexus? Can I transfer contacts myself?

If I'm not mistaken. If you already have an android phone, your contacts should automagically sync to your google account. Then, when you get a new android phone and login with your account, all your contacts will be downloaded.

I checked that very thing at a Full Scale Verizon Store in the city. They told me that they could activate the phone for me on the spot, or let me take it
home and have it activated like it would be if I bought it online and had it shipped to me. The little Subcontract store here in Smallville said they had to activate the handset or they don't get paid....

For what it's worth. I wanted to unlock it first, then activate it.

Activation - You should be able to activate it from your account online.

For Contacts:

• Coming from an Android Phone - no - Android will sync it for you
• Coming from another phone that had VZW Backup Assistant - in theory, no, Backup Assistant will put the contacts on your phone (what I don't know is if Google then stores them in its cloud, or if they're "VZW contacts")
• Coming from another phone that didn't - you might need help, unless you can use a data cable and contact extracting software (BitPIM, etc) yourself

No, Sim should be ready out of the box.

Yes, as long as you currently have an Android/Google synced account or VZ backup assistant.
