The Official Thread for No Sound after HeadPhone Use

I can empathize with all of you. I also have the crackly sound and the cut off but I can always do something and get the sound back without having to re-boot. It does kind of stink though.

I have same problem, but it is intermittent. I plug two jacks into my phone, my only set of headphones, and my aux jack that goes to my car stereo. Does not happen everytime as I have tested both, and can't always reproduce the problem.

Alright. Now that Martin is saying that he has no problem this is leading me to think it's a hardware problem. Guys, if you can, get your Droids out.

On the headphone jack, can you press on it to move it around a little? Like, plug in a pair of headphones as it really shows the play. Tell me if there is play with the jack.

Martin especially you, if you can do that, and if you come up with a result, that would be great.

Also say if you're having the problem.

I plugged my headset in and tried to wiggle it around. It moves slightly but doesn't seem loose. I don't notice any crackle. When my phone had the issue of not having the sound I had been using the car Aux cable. It doesn't seem to crackle through my radio either except when I unplug it before turning the radio off. It makes a huge pop when I do that. I will try to plug it into my Aux again today when I go out and see if that has any play or if I can reproduce the problem.

So just read this thread and decided I wanted to test mine to see if I had any popping or lack of sound in my speaker on pulling the headphones. Mine doesn't experience either. How long does it usually take for the popping to manifest itself after you start the music?

I checked to see how much play I have in my droid's headphone jack and it doesn't seem like a lot.

In an earlier post I mentioned that I have one set of headphones that always has this problem and some other sets of headphones that never have this problem. Here's a picture of their plugs:

The one on the left always has the unplug = no sound problem. The one on the right never has this problem. I have multiple headphones that DON'T have this problem, while only the one on the left in the picture has this problem.

The headphones that are having the issue for me are Altec Lansing UHS307 Earclips. Here's a link to where I got em:

Here's the different things that happen when I plug/unplug the different sets of headphones in while I have a song playing over the speaker in the music player:

Using headphones that work with my droid:
I plug in headphones. The music immediately starts playing out of the headphones rather than from the speaker. When I unplug, the media player pauses. If I hit play, the music resumes playing from the speaker. That's what I expect.

Using the Altec Lansing headphones (the ones that don't work properly):
I plug the headphones in. This causes the music player to pause for some reason. I hit play again, music plays through the headphones. I unplug the headphones. This causes the music player to pause. That's good. I hit play again. The music player time code shows that it is progressing through the song, but no sounds will come out of the speaker. Thats bad!

Now, if I plug the Altec Lansing headphones back in and I can hear the music and all other sounds through them. Alternatively, I can plug in my working headphones after unplugging the disfunctional ones and hear all sounds and music through them, then I can unplug them and hear sounds through the speaker without having to reboot! (Even after causing the no sound problem by plugging/unplugging the disfunctional headphones in)

Obviously, the problem has something to do with the things that are being plugged into the droid (and the droid's inability handle certain plugs or something).

The plug I was using that caused the problem looks like the one on the right! The headphones I use that have never caused this problem looks like the one of the left so I am not sure this is the issue. This still doesn't tell me if it is a hardware issue or software problem.

Darn well I was hoping everyone would just say that their "problem headphones" all had 3 little black rings instead of 2. I really don't know what those are. There's got to be some kind of variable here that's making the difference. It may not be something to do with the plug itself. It may just be something else about the headphones.

funny i just did the test and i have both the types of headphones. the ones that have been giving me problems is the one with 2 rings

I've noticed that I only have the crackling problem when listening to Pandora via AUX in the car stereo, before or after 2.0.1, and with 2 different aux cables. DroidLive or any other podcasts, mp3s, or videos do not crackle at all. .......
I also never had the sound cutout until just now as I was reading about it. I get halfway throught the first page of posts and my girl calls...no sound except speaker!!

It's kinda eerie... like a bad Stephen King movie

I have this problem, and also a loose headphone port that crackles and randomly cuts in and out on both sides with just about any perturbation. It's gotten progressively worse with time and use, but I don't know whether the speaker problem is independent of the physical aux port issues. It seemed to appear when the other issues got worse, but that may just be when I noticed it.

It's worse with some headphones than others, but none are perfect. All of the headphones tested work fine with an ipod touch and my computer.

I called VZW and they're sending a replacement unit. Hopefully, this is something uncommon...

I have lacked to replace my Droid, primarily for preserving my data.

When you get your new unit, tell us how the headphone compares

I searched out and joined this forum just to find out about this problem. Only started after update on the 12th. Regular earbuds work fine. No issues with audio routing with regular earbuds, pull them out and it just works. However, If I use my set of iPhone headphones with the mic in the wire (and 4 rings on the plug), the audio never switches back to speaker unless I reboot the phone. Which is a major bummer, because with these headphones, you can squeeze the mic to toggle play/pause. Its really sweet. But they break my phone. I would call and make vzw replace it, but would the replacement work? Is everyone having this issue, or just a select few? Thanks guys.

idk if a replacement would fix your issue

I bet that plugging/unplugging your normal earbuds will get rid of the problem after you lose sound because of your apple headphones w/ the mic. That way you wouldn't have to reboot.

Of course that assumes you are carrying around both sets of headphones...lol
