The Official Thread for No Sound after HeadPhone Use

I regrettably had to return my Droid today to Verizon for this very problem. The problem, is that anytime I use the headphone jack to listen to tunes or podcasts in the car and then remove the chord from the jack both the phone speaker (the actual speaker for the phone that is at the top of the touchscreen) and the speaker phone do not work. The only way to get them to work again is to reboot the phone. This is the second phone I have had with this problem, and Verizon seemed unwilling or unable to let me exchange it for a third phone.
Because I bought the Droid to replace my old smart phone and my Ipod, not being able to easily switch between music and phone calls was a dealbreaker for me. I was up against the 30 day return window with Verizon, so I had to decide whether I wanted to wait on a software upgrade to fix the problem. A software upgrade that may never come.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVED the Droid otherwise. I guess I will just have to wait on another Android phone to come out that I can use with Verizon (maybe an unlocked Nexus One) or just get a iPhone in a couple of months when my Verizon contract runs out. I have searched the forum and have seen a couple of threads that touch on this issue, but they seem to all meander into posts about a static problem in the headphone jack which I did not have. Is this a widespread problem? I have to believe it is since both my phones were essentially doing the same thing.
The worst part is that now I have to reactivate my WinMo smartphone. It's like going from HDTV to a 12" black and white TV

I have the same issue and my fix so far has been to simply make a call to my voicemail immediately after disconnecting the headphones. Works like a charm.

That's interesting......I can't imagine why that would work, but I am glad it did for you. I actually called my voice mail a number of times after disconnecting the chord from the headphone jack just to see if the problem occurred before someone called me. It sadly never fixed the problem, only a reboot would do that.

same issue here. i noticed this first while using google listen but the problem continued on with the media player. i thought i had it figured out with my unplug ritual of carefully exiting out of the program systematically. turns out it worked once of twice and now who knows?? killing the software also does not fix the issue (atk)

this happens to me at random intervals of using the headphone jack for anything. it seems there is something that is not registering the disconnect. the solution that i have found is to either plug headphones in and remove them again, or, if on a call, to put it on speakerphone and off again.

so i completely restored my new phone with all the original apps. been listening to the music player for the past hour and it is super clear, with no crackling. so i guess it really was a hardware issue. i suggest you folks go grab a replacement if you can.

Any tricks on backing up the data on the old phone and restoring it on the new phone? Did you just switch memory cards and reinstall the applications or did you use some program?

Any ideas why some Droids have this problem all the time and some don't (I only noticed it twice and I use headphone jack daily). It's same system (I assume pretty much everybody is running 2.0.1), is it possible that it's some setting or application that is causing this?

How about people post what's their typical usage - apps running (services in background), apps used for playing music etc.

I don't have too many extra apps running in background, mostly standard stuff (emails, messaging etc.) Using padora and last.fm to play music. Have headphone jack connected during night, then connect to bluetooth on my way to work. Then some phone calls. No music is playing when I'm disconnecting headphone jack. Virtually never see the issue (twice in about 2 months I have Droid).

NOTE: My replacement phone no longer has this problem.

Take your phones in to get it checked out, the guy at my store was awesome about it.

So I described this problem on another thread... 20 pages later this happens to someone:

NeoGAF - View Single Post - Meet the Motorola Droid

"So hi, real gripe story here that makes me worried about the Droid.

I came home a little early today, and after maybe 30 minutes I started hearing loud yelling from outside my door. My upstairs neighbor had a crazy abusive boyfriend outside and she was wielding a kitchen knife to keep him out and away from herself and her 3 year old son.

He went away for a minute, and I stepped out and told her that if he came around again that I'm calling the cops, and that she should get inside.

He did.

I called 911 on my Droid. I couldn't hear anyone on the line. I kept asking "Hello?" and nothing. I got 2-3 calls back, and still couldn't hear anything. I turned up the volume, and nothing. Finally turned on speakerphone and could hear them.

The Droid just earned an enormous black mark in my book.

(The cops came, and nobody got hurt, thank god)"

Reboot worked for me. The funny thing is, I had just plugged in headphones to see if the set I had actually fit or not, and then I had the problem with crackling and the speakerphone not working and wasn't sure why. This is why I heart these forums!

You shouldn't have to reboot, that's BS. Having the same problem hooking up an audio cable from the Droid to my AUX input in my car. Disconnect the audio cable to make a call, call goes through, but no phone audio. Funny thing is though it doesn't happen when I receive a call; I can disconnect the audio cable, and the phone works fine.

two things i've noticed on how to solve the problem.

1. put the phone on speaker and off again will fix the problem.
2. insert headphones and remove them again will fix the problem.

See, to me it's not that big a deal to just turn the phone off and back on again. Guess that's just me. Seems a lot easier (and most likely cheaper) fix. Yeah, in a perfect world it'd be nice to not have any problems with it, but in my book this one is rather minor.
