[TIP]Videos on DROID/Milestone

it was an .avi file i ripped off my blu-ray disk. I have the original.

It's just a widescreen format. it looks great otherwise.

Cool, though after trying it on a DVD I think I'll stick with CloneDVD Mobile for ripping my DVDs. It's a lot faster. But I def keep this for my other conversions.

I just converted the hurt locker which was a wide screen flick. it converted on my droid with the vertical bars. I checked the video settings in the program and it was set to "fit to screen". changed that to 'none' and i'm reencoding it right now. hope it works.

Well that didnt work. Still has the vertical black backs. ideas??

I have the same questions. Converts pretty quick, but all my vids do not seem to stretch the entire screen size....(Using MileStone)

agreed. settings are not optimized for the droid(milestone).

back to Super/Handbrake. :icon_evil:

I cant get this to work, am I missing something?

I have it set for motorola milestone, then select the DVD, then I select the largest file(the movie) and add it to the job list and then press encode and about an hour later I have a useless file that does nothing.

Do i need to change something in the settings or am i doing something else wrong?

XMedia Settings

Since it's free I can't really complain about it but I think the interface could be better. You got tabs along the bottom to specify settings and you have sub-settings within some tabs and then you also have the options menu... why not put all these settings in one place? The options menu > bitrate calculator lets you specifiy the final file size. You have to choose from the drop down menu at the bottom, I use 650MB option and you also have to specify the file size on the right hand side. I think by default it's set to 1.4GB. I'd recommend setting to 650MB as well because the file may become slightly larger than 650MB depending on other settings. Supposedly you can remove the black lines in widescreen formated movies by using the autocrop feature. I'm still testing this on different movies to see how well it works. I think the milestone/droid's non-standard screen resolution is why you always end up with black lines. I typically use my HX4705 for watching movies because the standard 640x480 resolution just keeps things simple and the battery life is way better. Personally I still like Apollo #1 DVD ripper for converting DVDs to XVID but I will probably use XMedia Recode for converting other video formats. I guess it just depends on what you are going to use to view the videos with. At any rate XMedia is a great find and I thank RinTinTigger for posting it. :)

How to Convert Without the Black Bars (Full Screen on Droid)

So I finally checked and tinkered with XMedia Recode and it was actually easy to use. The only thing that I don't like about it is how slow it converts the files, but it works. Personally, I use a different converter since it's faster. Anyway, there is a way to convert your DVD or other video files so that you can use the whole screen of the Droid without having the black bars. I'm going to list the step by step below on how to do this. I tried it with a 701 MB video file and the final output after converting it was 990.47 MB. You will need to download and install the XviD codec. Just google it, download the codec installer and install. Let me know if you guys have any questions about this.

How to Convert Without the Black Bars (Full Screen on Droid):

1. Rip your DVD to get te DVD files or find your video that you want to convert and open XMedia Recode

2. Load your DVD or other video file (choose the appropriate one on the top - DVD or Movie)

3. Go down to the "Format" tab and choose "Custom" for "Profile:" box

4. Choose "MP4" for the "Format:" box

5. On the right, put the dot on "Video and Audio" for the "Output stream type" box

6. Choose "XviD" for "Video Codec" box (you will need to install the XviD codec on your computer to use this, just google XviD codec)

7. Choose "AAC" for "Audio Track 1" box and same for "Audio Track 2" box (if you choose the other ones, the file size will get bigger)

8. Put a check on "Audio/Video synchronisation" box

9. Next, go back up and go to the "Crop/Preview" tab

10. Put "854" for "Width:" box and "480" for "Height:" box (854 x 480 is the Droid's screen resolution)

11. Go down to the "Destination:" box and choose where you want to save the file that will be converted

12. Click Encode on the very top of XMedia Recode to start converting (it will take quite some time to finish so be patient - around an hour)

13. After converting your video, just put it in Droid and enjoy! :icon_ banana:

Just to be clear, don't change the other settings that you see in there, unless it's mentioned in the steps above, or unless you really know what you're doing and changing. I convert/make/edit/rip/burn/transfer videos quite frequently and it's kind of a hobby to me so if you have a question just let me know.

I might be wrong but I think the dimensions have to be multiples of 16 and 854 is not thus the video will actually be 848 x 480.

Well, not as easy as I thought. Once I got the movie to begin encoding under the Milestone(mp4) and once I got it onto my phone it was a gray, blotchy screen with audio that sounded robotic. I'm assuming there are settings that need to be altered that are not simply encompassed in selecting Motorola Milestone?

I encoded using the xvid codec (which I prefer) and have discovered that file sizes 500MB or higher for a full movie is the best for viewing on the Droid/Milestone. Using the method specified by bastosero I set the resolution to 848 x 480, I used autocrop to remove the black bars (note: you will still get black bars on widescreen video but there's no reason to encode them in the video so it's good to crop them out) Under the options menu > bitrate calculator I set the file size to 400MB and the audio bitrate setting between 80 and 128. Anything smaller than 500MB file size looks slightly blocky on the Droid just depends on how much space you want to eat up on your SD card. *Note that setting the size to 400MB doesn't mean the final video file will be that small, chances are it will be larger. Depends on length of movie, audio bitrate settings, and other variables.
