If it wasn't for netflix and hulu, I wouldn't have time warner, and just use my phone. Gaming really doesn't transfer a lot of data, you just want to transfer it quickly. And honestly, I get roughly the same ping from my droid as from time warner.(and that was paying extra for their speedboost, which I promptly canceled, and speeds are identical as before)

It's not capable of creating a 5 user, infrastructure hotspot. This is why it's not offered.

What possible motivation would they have for not offering it?

They won't even admit the D1 has the capability, so at least those users will always have a get out of jail free card lol.
