[Tutorial]Sysctl and you, A guide to better preformance and battery life.

Hey imoseyon, quick question out of curiousity. Can any of these performance/battery tweaks be applied to the OG Droid? Now there's ROMs and themes aplenty, but when it comes to internal file system tweaks, they are few and far between, if not at all. I usually just do basic build.prop tweaks like vm heapsize, which I have no idea if lower or higher is better, and wifi scan time, just basic stuff.

Now obviously these tweaks can't be applied the exact same, since the X has about 2-3 times more RAM than the OG, but maybe you experimented with it originally to test some things, then made your way over to the DX/D2?? No idea, I'm just letting hope guide me at this point.

So some of the tweaks will probably not work so well on the OG. Minfree and the kernel vm tweaks specifically depend on the device having a fair amount of free RAM.

Other tweaks like crond and logcat will probably work ok. One thing you can try is open up the zip and go through the scripts that are in there and manually apply some of them. Good luck!

Pretty new as far as knowing whats good and whats not. They will be in the next stock builds IE Liberty 2.0

Yeah most of the ROM devs tend to focus on the..well, the ROMs. ;) They tend not to think about the kernel or even get into it - they're already pretty busy doing the awesome jobs building the ROMs. I hope to fill the gap based on my work experience.

I've been working with some devs to integrate most of the no brainer mods (ie. Apex 1.4.1, Liberty 2.0), and I will continue to release the more experimental mods via my zips.

Definatly a fan of your work. I had no idea what any of that stuff did and ultimately i left if alone. Now that you have done all this i get even more out of my phone than i expected. Thank you so much!

Hi, I've been trying to install this via the .zip provided in the OP (v4.2). I Boot into recovery, install .zip from SD Card, it says install is complete, I reboot, then I check terminal emulator (second command) and it doesn't give back the values you listed. For example, instead of swappiness=0 as you said, mine says swappiness=0. I tried doing this twice, aswell as a regular reboot. No luck. I don't have Android modding experience, so I'd rather not do it manually.

I will be doing this shortly to my Droid 2. This is something definitely recommended for heavy data users or using the phone a lot and I'm one of them. My job also requires me being outside for a long time (12 to 18 hours at a time) and will be applying this to the phone so I'm not having to use my Droid so sparingly with no way of recharging it.

How exactly do you apply these setting when using the zip file? i get some of the values that are the same but some of them aren't so is there something else besides just installing the zip that i need to change to fully get all of these settings?

Jboxen, please make an important note on your first post (showing all instructions) and include this part (from one of imoseyon's post) for people who want to or need to revert back to stock settings:

**REVERTING BACK TO STOCK**

1) revert build.prop file
2) delete /etc/init.d/99imoseyon.

EDIT: You may need to include instructions for new users on how to do step 1 and then step 2. It's very possible you'll get people asking "where do I find build.prop file? and how do I revert it?" I think others will get the idea on how to do step 2 which is mainly going to your Root Explorer and find the 99imoseyon file.

Thanks.

My zip does not apply all the settings in the op. You should be good with the settings provided by the zip.

sent from my dx running heavily tweaked fission
