Unlock Before Activation?

Hey All, More in my dizzying array of naive questions. I'm getting a replacement for a stolen Rezound in the next few days, and I was wondering if I could unlock it before I activate it and link it to my Google account. I can't think of any good reason why I couldn't--I'm trying to avoid the whole sync-then-resync think after unlocking--but you never know... thanks, john

Can I avoid going through the google signup?
