You can't fix what aint broken, and just because an updated version of your device has been released doesn't mean that you have to replace it. Times like these call for us to make use of what we have. You Nexus 7 from 2012 is still a viable tablet, but it may not be running the latest and greatest version of Android just yet. Cyanogen Mod 11 brings Android Kit Kat 4.4 to the 2012 Nexus 7. It is still not official and developer "swordrun10" advises that since it is still in beta there will be a few bugs. So far there are no known issues. You can install this like you would any other AOSP rom, simply boot into recovery, wipe data/ cache/ dalvik, then install the rom and gapps. If you would like to give cm11 a try head to the link below for the download.

1) The 2012 Nexus 7 does have KitKat, it is rolling out now and you could sideload it via ADB yesterday.

2) So far, KitKat was a long wait and big deal about nothing. Transparent Navbar and Notification bar is about the only difference that I can see and feel. No new kernel, several of the new features are left out, etc... KitKat is a flop IMHO. Any improvement is good, but so far I really don't see any difference from Jelly Bean.
