Update your PRL'S

I have learned and used so much information throughout this Forum it's better then talking to a real person (customer service types)! Thx Cereral Killer:motdroidhoriz:

Did this right after the update and there was no change in PRL. Just tried again and it updated to 51716. Guess you have to stay on top of it until they decide to push it. More bars is more better!

Create a new contact named "Update PRL" and for the phone number use *22891
Once a month dial the contact and get updated.
Is that easy or what? :)

Nifty indeed.

And adding that calendar reminder to repeat it monthly makes it even easier to remember to do it.

It is recommended to do this every month to stay up to date.

Doesn't mean they will necessarily change every month but they do change them.

I fear updating the PRL. I updated one time and went from my usual bare minimum service at home to no service at all.

Luckily it was an LG phone and there was available software that allowed me to put the previous one back in.

It would be nice if there was a way to go back on a Droid.

I used to work at Sprint so this info may not be accurate for verizon but here it is anyway.

The PRL list is a list of non-sprint (or in our case non-verizon) towers that serve to provide service to your phone when you are not on the verizon network. It does not update verizon towers, those are updated automatically. The only affect is that you may get a better signal when roaming. For instance, lets say your house does not get verizon coverage and you're actually using another company's tower and it is far away giving you a weak signal. If that company builds a closer tower your phone won't know about it unless you do a PRL update. But if Verizon builds a closer tower, your phone will automatically get a signal from it without needing to update the PRL.

It does not affect your Verizon signal at all. It is a great placebo that customer service reps tell people calling in complaining of bad service.

That is what we were taught at Sprint (and also a primary example of why Sprint is a terrible provider).

For what it's worth : )

Verizon Wireless is constantly advancing its roaming technology to provide you with superior roaming capabilities. By updating your PRL every few weeks, you can be sure you have access to our enhancements. As a result you may experience:

  • Longer battery life
  • Fewer dropped or blocked calls
  • Clear, crisp connections in more areas across the United States
  • Ability to connect to the digital network in more parts of the country

As far as I know, this is an accurate description of the way the PRL works. I was told by a Verizon rep (many years ago) that I should update the PRL before I travel, as it will affect the roaming capabilities of any phone on the Verizon network. I don't travel all that much, but I still update the PRL every couple of months. When I do travel, I update it before I leave the house.

Because of the posting here, I updated it today. It's now the new 51716 version. Thanks for posting -- this is good information for every Verizon customer to have.
