Using droid for music in your car?

I connect my Droid 3 to my car stereo's aux port every day, using the same cable I used for my iPod. The standard cable connects to the headphone jack on the phone and playback control is done through the phone. Works great.

You can use the aux port, a cassette adapter, an FM transmitter too. What I would recommend is to change the stereo. If you look around Crutchfields site, you may find something more compatible with android, but I installed a Pioneer 3200BT in my 06 mustang gt. This type of stereo is "double din" and is therefore larger, but you can use an SD card, DVD, CD, or aux inputs on it. It works great, but sometimes the dock gets twitchy and doesn't send audio signal via the 3.5mm cable at the best quality. You can find it on Amazon, and install wasn't too hard. This stereo will not receive Bluetooth stereo, which sucks, but something newer may have that capability.

Hoosiermama you are the best went to walmart last night got the griffin aux cable went to my car took it out of the box hooked it up and bam it worked lol you are the best!

I have two Motorola docks for the D3, one in my car where I stream audio via bluetooth and the other in my wife's car with it plugged into the aux input to the stereo. I believe there are two versions sold Verizon, one have the aux cable included and the other without. The. One that includes it has the aux output jack branch off of the usb connection through the dock. This means you don't have to plug in an additional 3.5mm jack to your phone every time you get into the car, just drop it into the dock. Unfortunetly this setup still requires you to control your music from the phone which is why I prefer bluetooth audio in my car so that I can control everything through the stereo.

May I ask what deck you're using to pair with your phone? I'm shopping for a new head unit right now and I'm so frustrated by how many have killer iJunk interfaces but don't even mention Droid. How can I tell how many features I'll be able to control from the deck vs what I'll have to run from the phone? I'm thinking Pandora, podcasts, navigation will all have to be handled on the phone. I'd love it if you could tell me I'm wrong about that.

I haven't seen a single stock headunit in a car that lets you control android from the headunit.... and frankly i don't think you're going to find one due to the market fragmentation. Still rather have my bionic over ijunk tho. Just use one of the many car docks and control it from the phone. The bionic version has a splitter for power and minijack audio.

You will not find a headunit that will control a DROID in the same manner that they can an iPod/iphone because android just doesn't have that feature (at least as far as I've seen). What you should look for is any headunit that supports Bluetooth Streaming Audio. More specifically the Bluetooth protocol is A2DP. Any stereo that supports A2DP Bluetooth protocol will allow you to start, stop, seek, skip and pause. It will not display any music info, but it works well for what it does.

Drat. That is what I thought would be the case but I read "control everything from the deck" and my hopes soared.

I have no tape deck or aux in on the stock deck in my 2004 Frontier. I will examine the wired FM modulator posted earlier (I'm in Los Angeles, so wired is necessary) or a new deck with streaming bluetooth. I think the super fancy one with the big screen posted earlier would be overkill if its just going to display "bluetooth audio" the majority of the time.

Thanks for the insights, everyone. There was a lot of help in this thread!

I have an issue with mine where, if I have my engine running, I can hear the engine noise through the speakers, when I have my phone plugged in to the aux port. Is there anything out there to cancel out this interference? When I plug my sat radio into the aux I don't get any noise from the engine. Thanks.

Engine noise is usually caused by a poor ground. If you get engine noise using your phone in the AUX port while the phone is NOT plugged into a charger, than the bad ground is on the stereo itself.

You wouldn't happen to be charging your phone at the same time. Mine does this only when charging. I haven't checked but I imagine the ground of the microUSB plug and the ground of the headphone jack are tied together inside the phone so noise from the charger can pass through the audio input to the FM transmitter.

I use mine all the time. I used to use the tape adapter till I got a stereo upgrade. Now I use the male to male auxilary cord. Plugs in and you can listen to music and when you get a call it stops the music and let's you take the call through the speakers then when they hang up the music resumes.

I have an aftermarket JVC stereo in my car. It has a 3.5 mm aux jack. I use a 3.5 to 3.5 patch cord, choose the aux setting, and fire away. I also plug it into charger. Busy with wires, but it works.
