Verizon Snubs Their Nose at Customers Leaving for Cheaper Carriers

Bloggers were suggesting that Apple should look at them as well.

I'd be shocked if they actually did. Apple likes control over their products. I'm willing to bet in a year or so we'll see 'The Apple Carrier.' They already have the Apple SIM so it isn't a far stretch to move to straight carrier.

The Apple Sim has been rejected by most of the Telcos in the U.S. It is really a great idea. In the past 2 months I have had 4 Sim cards swapped put simply because I wanted to switch numbers on phones that I owned. Had they honored the Apple Sim it would have been cut down to 2 Sim cards.

Yeah I know how you feel. Why can't everyone just get along? So may complaints about not being able to hot-swap them like Apple probably wants you to be able to. It's good for International travelers too. It's the one thing I liked about Apple and carriers just want to muck it up with ridiculousness.

I'm still not sure why simcards still exist. It would seem easier just to bake that little bit of metal foil straight onto the radio chip and be done with simcards and simcard trays altogether.

Aside from locked phones and bootloaders, I don't see anything VZW does that comes close to qualifying as draconian or anti-consumer...

I commented earlier they they keep disabling VoLTE on my Nexus 6 and locking me out of my account. When I call to fix it they say that I have to have a VZW branded N6 for that to work. After getting off of the phone I get my wife's iPhone 6 and put my SIM in and go into my account and reactivate VoLTE. I put the SIM back in my phone and VoLTE works fine... Then what do you think happens all over again a few days later?

Seems like a pretty pointless and draconian tactic to make me buy their branded device.

I didn't make it through all four pages of comments, so please forgive me if I'm just echoing what others have said.

I have been with Verizon for about five years now and I hate giving them my money every month. As much as I'd love to pay half of what I do now, I'm willing to pay what I do for the coverage I get. My main points of contention with them are their insistence on controlling everything (locking bootloaders, ridiculous way they handled the N7 LTE situation, ect.) and the fact that they are making it as hard as they can to hang on to unlimited without actually taking it away. I'm toying with the idea of switching to AT&T mainly for a slightly better deal and better device selection.

Aside from locked phones and bootloaders, I don't see anything VZW does that comes close to qualifying as draconian or anti-consumer. I've always found their customer service to be excellent, and their pricing isn't that much more than the competition (a little better for some, a little worse for others). $5-$10 a month more is nothing for the superior service.

They invest more in their network and they charge more for their service. Basic business. People who like a service but really can't afford it always complain about the price, doesn't matter if it's cellphone, cable, internet or mp3's. Arguments about "it costs too much" are almost always based solely on one's wallet and little else to do with the real world.

The draconian business practices I was referring to have little to do with the prices for their plans and more to do with other examples of the company's anti-consumer policies. Here are a few examples:

Also, I disagree that Verizon does everything right. Sometimes they come up with some really stupid ideas. Here are a couple of notable examples:

Despite all of these examples, I do agree that for the most part, Verizon provides good service. Their customer service is consistently rated at or near the highest of all the US carriers, and their network is solid. You are also correct that their prices aren't vastly more than the competition.

In the forefront, they take good care of their customers, but in the background they try to squeeze their customers and try to get away with as much as they can.

Finally, I think it's surprisingly short-sighted of you to pre-judge and claim that the reason why people complain is because they can't afford it. Not every complaint about a company is because of price. In fact, this contradicts what you said about the price not being that much different.

Most folks on this forum who have switched away from Verizon (or never tried them) did so because of their individual experiences. Perhaps there was something Verizon did that they didn't like, or they simply wanted to give someone else a try. Yes, sometimes that's because they are looking for a cheaper price, but trying to find extra value in your life is a wise virtue and doesn't mean you are cheap or poor. There's nothing wrong with trying to maximize what you get for your money. The best "bang for the buck" for you may not be the best "bang for the buck" for me or someone else.

Obviously in your life, you believe that Verizon offers you the maximum value, and I am sure that is also true for many others. I just think Verizon could be even stronger if they worked on being more consumer friendly, but that's just one perspective.

That was a great list, thanks Stormy!
Except now I want to leave Verizon. WTH just happened!? LOL

It's all about location, location, location. I can choose from almost every MVNO or parent carrier with the exception of Sprint.

When I'm on the move though the choices become slimmer. Not with the MVNOs, but with the parent companies. Verizon is the first one to be disqualified because their coverage maps do not reflect their actual coverage.

ATT works better for our company in the boondocks that we travel to. It's the reason they generally subscribe to ATT with the exception of a handful of employees.
